There is a diagnostic placement exam and five lesson plans each for three levels of ESL. There are 18 teaching methods described and 18 sets of Exercises

    This ebook offers some ideas for experienced teachers of English, and it will serve well as a menu of lessons and activities for those tutors or teachers of English who are entering the ESL classroom with little or no experience. The guide is arranged in sections.

    At the beginning, you will find a set of lesson plans. These plans are intended to serve as suggestions only. They will help you get off to a running start. Following the plans, you will find a series of pages that deal with methods. The lesson plans are keyed to the method sheets by method name and number. The next section contains a set of grammar exercises. The last section in the book consists of an appendix containing a play and a reading selection as well as several other useful bits of information. All of this material is referenced in the lesson plans or in one of the method sheets. The method sheets also contain examples of the types of drills and games that will help you implement the plans.

    Charles David Keith Jr. was born in Muskegon, Michigan on February 13, 1942 and had a normal Midwestern childhood, graduating from high school in June of 1959. Two days later he was in Marine Corps Boot Camp in San Diego, California. After his tour of duty with the Marines, he worked as a police officer in Newport Beach, California and later in Muskegon, Michigan. There he met Nancy, the beautiful young woman who later became his wife and who convinced him to become a teacher, a decision he has never regretted. The Keiths raised two daughters. One is now an RN, and the other is a teacher. Because he specialized in ESOL, his career has taken them all over the world. He has taught in Saudi Arabia, El Salvador, Lithuania, South Korea, and China. This book was begun during his work in Lithuania in the 1990’s following the break up of the Soviet Union.David Keith has written two novels for young adult readers. Hands Across Time is available from many retailers in Ebook and print form. The novel is set in a Native American village in 1642 and Montague, Michigan in modern times. An excerpt from this novel is included in this book. His second novel, Arthur, is to be released shortly in Ebook form.

      About the Author

      Introduction

      This guide offers some ideas for experienced teachers of English, and it will serve well as a menu of lessons and activities for those tutors or teachers of English who are entering the ESL classroom with little or no experience. The guide is arranged in sections. At the beginning, you will find a set of lesson plans. These plans are intended to serve as suggestions only. They will help you get off to a running start. Following the plans, you will find a series of methods. The lesson plans are keyed to the method sheets by method number. The next section contains a set of grammar exercises. The last section in the book consists of an appendix containing a play, a reading selection, and several other useful bits of information. All of this material is referenced in the lesson plans or in one of the method sheets. The method sheets also contain examples of the types of drills and games that will help you implement the plans.

      The following is a list of suggestions that will help to make your teaching experience a pleasant success.

      1. Be prepared. Plan your lessons and your activities in advance.

      2. Keep it simple.

      3. Have backup plans and materials ready just in case you find that your students are already familiar with the material you had planned to present.

      4. Teaching is as much an art as it is a science; therefore, each teacher and tutor is justified in using those methods with which he or she is most comfortable.

      5. Be flexible.

      6. Enjoy yourself.

      7. Speak slowly and clearly. Don't forget to smile.

      8. Learn the names of your students (work on pronouncing them correctly) and use them often!

      The suggestions presented here are not all inclusive. Ideas that the individual tutor or teacher chooses to try may be as valid as any presented here.

      A Short Test to Determine Level

      Your students may be grouped by ability level before you are introduced to them. If they are not, the following oral quiz will enable you to place them at something approximating the correct level. Normally, students are divided into four levels, but for our purposes, this test is set up to identify only three. If a fourth level appears
