About this ebook

When Stuart Anderson flew into his native New York, there were few signs that his dazzling career was about to crash land, or that he was about to be murdered.
The lead guitarist and singer in The Black Bartinos was returning to New York;, the city where he was born, for a concert tour to mark the twentieth anniversary of the band's birth.
For Anderson, at 37, this trip had a special purpose. He was preparing for the next stage of his career as a solo singer. As he approached 40, everything looked rosy. Or so he told his friends.
He was rich and famous, with loving, attentive parents, and friends who he could call on.
He had the support of a band that had been his "family" since he was a teenager.
By the time of his murder, many of the conflicts of Anderson’s life were closing in.
Then he was murdered.
FBI Special Agent Nick Benson has to unravel the mystery of his murder before the suspects flee the City.

    About The Author

    Chapter One

FBI Special Agent Nick Benson was used to being awake at four a.m. but today was different. He could hear the birds which sat in the trees beyond his window. The glints of daylight between the clouds heralded another dawn. Today was the first day he hadn’t woken early. He reached for the gold watch on the dresser and squinted to read the small numbers on its pearl inlay. He tilted the face of the watch towards the window and hoped the sliver of light would help him to see. It was seven-thirty a.m. and he was late.

I would go with you to your consultation at the hospital but I have to be in a meeting at eight, his wife Finkel said. She stood in the doorway of his bedroom and leant on the doorjamb. She had pulled a tough day shift the day before and still looked tired. Missed Nick being in her bed. The current sleeping arrangements were one more thing which had compromised their marriage. He was too tired and she was too stressed to make love. Often they collapsed on the couch in front of the television, a glass of wine in one hand and a plate of food in front of them and didn’t talk much.

Hopefully I’ll have the answer to the problem when I come home. Nick kissed her lips then she went and sat at the kitchen counter while the coffee brewed.

Finkel called after him while he opened the front door and scooped up the New York Times. On his way back to the kitchen he opened the folded paper and the headline stopped him. The photograph below the headline confirmed his worst fears.

Honey? Finkel called to him, and it brought him back to reality. He reached the kitchen and stood in front of her. He looked drained of all color. More than he usually did.

What’s happened? Finkel took the newspaper from his hands as he sat down.

"Rock Star Stuart Anderson, lead guitarist with the Black Bartinos, found dead,’’ she read aloud. The article gave the biography of the one-time rock star, who had been found dead at the Canterbury Hotel in Times Square. Detectives at the scene indicated he had died under suspicious circumstances. He was thirty-seven years old, but Nick remembered Stuart’s father Sean from his time in the Sepulvedas; a rock band who had rivalled the Rolling Stones on the scale of fame and stardom.

Why has this shocked you so much? Finkel sat opposite Nick, and watched the color rise in his cheeks. He reached for the softness of her hand with its curled fingers and uncurled them so he could link his fingers with hers.

I knew his Dad. I first met him with the Sepulvedas backstage after a concert at Madison Square Garden in the eighties. I can’t believe Stuart has died in suspicious circumstances. It’s almost surreal. Finkel sipped her coffee while she stared at Nick.

Why would he be downtown at the Canterbury Hotel? It’s a flop house for homeless people. Finkel scanned the rest of the article for the hint of any suspects.

Maybe he was back on cocaine, or trying to kick it again. I hadn’t heard anything new from the band after they reformed ten years ago. I even thought he was dead at one point. Nick looked at the photograph and was reminded of the music the Sepulvedas had played at the concert. He’d discarded his vinyl record collection in one of his episodes of decluttering in a house move between Los Angeles and Washington, DC, soon after he had joined the FBI. He’d research the band after he had returned from his appointment with the psychologist.
