The typical summer internship isn't supposed to be a life-changing event full of Frankenstein-esque science and run-ins with the authorities. But, a year before I was set to graduate from college, that's exactly what I got. It all started the June before my senior year...
* * *
I entered the lab and stashed the cooler containing my lunch under the table, just like I had every morning for the past six weeks. That was the only place to put it, really, as cramped as the room was with tables and cabinets and a wide assortment of biology-related gear. It was a small, windowless room in the basement of one of the older buildings on campus. Most of the rest of the floor is used for storage, so my boss and I are really the only ones who ever do anything in that part of the building.
Dr. James Williams was already there, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as usual. He was a middle-aged man of average height and build with dark hair that was graying at the temples. He had a kind face that was devoid of the typical evil college professor scowl
that seems all too common nowadays. He was also one of the smartest men I'd ever met. In spite of his genius, though, he was completely down-to-earth—he didn't like to be called Dr. Williams,
preferring Jimmy
instead. I doubt I'll ever have such a smart, cool guy as a boss again. I've taken lots of things in my life for granted, but this internship isn't one of them.
Good morning, Kevin.
Morning.
I'm not really a morning person, but for Jimmy's sake I try to pretend that I'm not in a foul mood. I usually am, though. Mornings suck.
Today might be the day,
he said with an eager gleam in his eye. He was obviously enthusiastic, but I could tell he was a little tentative, too. Scientists tend to be like that—they're afraid to get their hopes up because there are so many things that can go wrong and force you to start the experiment over from scratch. No matter how promising something looks, they force themselves to keep cool. Jimmy was like that now, but just barely. He was practically bouncing up and down.
The day?
The day I find out if my work will pay off.
Ah. That. Well, I hope so.
He frowned. You don't even remember where I left off, do you?
I shrugged. Sorry. I've been focused on my own assignment. Remind me of where you're at.
