About this ebook

The TMJ Healing Plan will teach readers to relieve their pain through simple retraining of tongue use, posture, and exercise techniques. Through this 10-step process endorsed by physical therapists, dentists, and head-and-neck-pain specialists, TMJ pain can be eliminated. Temporo mandibular joint disorders are shockingly common, effecting 1 in 25 people. From dental splints ($450) to surgery ($100,000+), sufferers have invested enormous amounts of time and energy to alleviate their pain. Cynthia Peterson provides tips on posture, placement of your tongue, and simple exercises that will reduce, relieve and eliminate TMJ problems. She first describes the temporo mandibular joint, the amount of work it does, why it can be stressed, and how it is related to your neck, back and head. There is then a discussion of various conditions that stem from TMJ disfunction. Then the 10 steps to healing begin: Use and Abuse of Your Jaw: How to Lighten the Load, The Power of Posture: Learn to Sit and Sleep Well, Tongue Training: Swallow Correctly, Teeth Apart, Breathing Well, How to Care for Your Muscles, The Benefits of Stress Reduction and Aerobic Exercise, Eating and Drinking Well, Special Exercises for the Neck, Medical Care and Problem Solving. Each section is illustrated with photos and/or line drawings to help the reader better understand the musculature and achieve success with the postures, positions and exercises. There is a substantial resource section at the end of the book.

If you are a TMD sufferer then you should definitely look into this book. I have had this for over 25 years now and if this book would have been available then I probably would be in a lot better shape now.The book explains the disorders of the TMJ and give you exercises and therapies to try to relieve the pain and suffering that go with this problem.I did try several of the things mentioned in this book but a lot of them require behavior modification and after 25 years I had limited success.Definitely for me, a long time sufferer, the exercises to relieve stress in the affected muscle groups was the most valuable part of this book.New TMD patients will benefit from the whole thing - especially the section on treatments that mostly are not effective.

TMJ problems are not uncommon, nor is the suffering they cause. A visit to an orthodontist and in some cases an ENT are important to your care, but this book is quite a valuable read for your own self-care. The TMJ Healing Plan clearly explains the mechanisms of TMJ dysfunctions, the common symptoms and signs they cause, and how this can affect the sufferer. It then clearly lays out simple measures to take at home to do what you can to care for yourself and alleviate pain and any other problems. It also explains why this is important even if your pain is minor or intermittent. Simple body alignment, posture, sleep habits, and similar changes can make a big difference to the patient's experience. It's a pleasure to add a scientifically-based, clear, concise volume on a common concern to the shelves.

I am still making my way through this book, but as it's been so long since I started, I thought I would add a few thoughts here. This is a very big approach to fixing TMJ pain. I've had jaw and neck pain for the past 12 years at least. I've been in physical therapy, consulted my dentist, tried massage, and while there's been improvement here and there, the pain is very persistent. At time, I've been unable to eat solid food because my jaw hurt so much. So I am really the target audience for this book.My initial reaction when I first picked up this book was that I was completely overwhelmed. There is so much in here that I didn't know where to start. It covers all kinds of aspects of your life, from how you sit, how you sleep, your posture, exercises to do, your tongue, teeth, and mouth, and lots more. I had no idea what to do first. After talking about it with my chiropractor, I decided to start with the posture section, and that made a big difference. I didn't realize how much my slump was affecting my jaw. You have to read the book and look at the pictures to understand why, but it was a good place to start. Now I am reading about the mouth and tongue, and we'll see if I can figure that part out.If you have persistent jaw and neck pain or know someone that does, I recommend this book. It is so hard to get answers, and while this may have too much information for some, it is certainly a good place to start looking for what changes you can make to improve your condition and feel better. I like that the author stresses how important it is to take charge of your own health, and this book will help with that.

This book offers very useful advice to those who live with TMJ issues. It is an empowering book that causes the reader to become conscious of everything from posture to head tilt and even whether or not his teeth touch. In addition to the great information, the author's presentation is quite good. The text doesn't get bogged down in a lot of medical jargon, an added plus.

The TMJ Healing Plan is a book that offers useful advice for preventing and dealing with TMJ disorders. The first part of the book explains the basics--what it is and what causes TMJ disorders--while the second part presents the ten-step plan to relieving the pain of TMJ disorders. This book cannot be read quickly. You will want to stop to make assessments about your own unhealthy habits (or the habits of your family members) and you will also want to try out some of the simpler exercises as you read. I, myself have suffered from jaw pain and headaches, and was given a TMJD diagnosis. I started to immediately identify some of my own problems with posture and tongue position which can exacerbate my problems. I also used the book to offer advice to my son, who slouches and often suffers from headaches and I found that I would need to have my daughter take precautions, since she has hypermobility (she's very flexible).I had a couple of issues with the book. I sometimes felt bogged down in the technical terms and wished I had paid better attention in biology class. Also, while the photos of models demonstrating exercises were clear and helpful, the muscle illustrations were harder for me to figure out. Because they were not color pictures, the graytone shading of trigger points often blended with the slightly lighter gray shade of pain referral patterns. It was hard to distinguish one from the other if a trigger point was on top of a pain referral pattern. A future edition of this book would benefit from color illustrations.I am still dealing with my own TMJ pain, but I feel more empowered from the wealth of information and advice in this book. I plan to refer to it often and would definitely recommend it to anyone who needs help with headaches, neck pain and jaw disorders. I would also recommend it as preventive care against future problems.

I have suffered with neck pain and been to dentists and chiropractors trying to resolve it. This worked, but having to pay $40 for every chiro visit got old quick. This book fits me like a glove. It addresses nearly all the issues I face. I have a tongue thrust and had no idea it could be to blame for my neck tension. Because of what I've read, I'm working on changing my swallow (not easy, but worth it) to stop the tongue thrust. I've also been doing the tongue and jaw exercises. I haven't noticed any incredible results, but it's only been a few days. I also have a poor posture, which this book addresses as another potential (and more obvious) culprit of neck pain.If you have jaw pain, muscle tension in the upper back and neck, or grind your teeth at night, I highly recommend the book. It addresses a multitude of areas to work on, backed by research.

Did your mother ever tell you to stop slouching? Turns out she was right. How about, "Keep your hands out of your pockets?" Yeah, well, in this case, not so much.Cynthia Peterson gives us more reasons, backed up with anatomical charts and diagrams, why we should maintain good posture and sleep habits, than we were perhaps aware of before. It isn't simply a matter of healing TMJ--but of experiencing less pain throughout our bodies.THE TEN STEP HEALING PLAN:Step 1: stop the overuse and abuse of your jawStep 2: learn how to stand, sit, and sleepStep 3: TLC--Teeth apart, Lips together, and Calm muscles and mindStep 4: train your tongue; swallow carefullyStep 5: Breathe wellStep 6: Muscle careStep 7: Care for disks and ligamentous structuresStep 8: Halt head and neck painStep 9: Reduce stress and begin exerciseStep 10: Make your action planPeterson writes with authority and I tend to believe her. However (there is always a "but," isn't there?), I could have done with a lot less of her ego (such as "_I_ offer helpful solutions") as if no one else ever could.Oh yeah, and about the "keep your hands out of your pockets" thing? Did you realize a person of 120 lbs is basically supporting 16-17 lbs in their shoulder girdle? Using chairs with the proper height arm rests, or keeping them supported inside your pockets can relieve a lot of stress and pressure. Who knew?

This book offers some helpful exercises and tips for reducing pain caused by TMJ. There are in depth suggestions of how to relieve the pain and change your actions so what you are doing (posture, etc.) won't aggravate your TMJ. Overall, it was informative, but boring.
