About this ebook
Choosing locally grown organic food is a sustainable living trend that’s taken hold throughout North America. Celebrated farming expert Eliot Coleman helped start this movement with The New Organic Grower published 20 years ago. He continues to lead the way, pushing the limits of the harvest season while working his world-renowned organic farm in Harborside, Maine.
Now, with his long-awaited new book, The Winter Harvest Handbook, anyone can have access to his hard-won experience. Gardeners and farmers can use the innovative, highly successful methods Coleman describes in this comprehensive handbook to raise crops throughout the coldest of winters.
Building on the techniques that hundreds of thousands of farmers and gardeners adopted from The New Organic Grower and Four-Season Harvest, this new book focuses on growing produce of unparalleled freshness and quality in customized unheated or, in some cases, minimally heated, movable plastic greenhouses.
Coleman offers clear, concise details on greenhouse construction and maintenance, planting schedules, crop management, harvesting practices, and even marketing methods in this complete, meticulous, and illustrated guide. Readers have access to all the techniques that have proven to produce higher-quality crops on Coleman’s own farm.
His painstaking research and experimentation with more than 30 different crops will be valuable to small farmers, homesteaders, and experienced home gardeners who seek to expand their production seasons.
A passionate advocate for the revival of small-scale sustainable farming, Coleman provides a practical model for supplying fresh, locally grown produce during the winter season, even in climates where conventional wisdom says it “just can’t be done.”
Eliot Coleman
Eliot Coleman has over fifty years experience in all aspects of organic farming, including field vegetables, greenhouse vegetables, rotational grazing of cattle and sheep, and range poultry. Coleman and his wife, Barbara Damrosch, presently operate a commercial year-round market garden, in addition to horticultural research projects, at Four Season Farm in Harborside, Maine.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Here is the standard, ground-breaking manual for year round vegetable growing for the professional and amateur farmer in New England. The book is clearly written and pragmatic.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5DAS Buch für den geschützten Gemüseanbau ohne Heizung. Jede Menge Wissen, nicht nur zu Gemüseanbau. Mittlerweile gibt es auch eine deutsche Ausgabe unter dem Titel 'Handbuch Wintergärtnerei', es steht auch im K.i.G.artenbücherkasten.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Not what I was looking for (focused on commercial small farm growers) but still picked up some valuable ideas. Very generous sharing specific techniques, with lots of pictures. Pithy.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I recently read this book while researching how to start a vegetable garden. I was looking for the other book by the same author, " Four season harvest ..." but the library happened to have this one. Some great ideas there about growing veggies in winter with the help of simple man made structures . Very easy to setup, even a caveman can do it ;D Also useful techniques for extending the season by getting an early start in spring and extending the fall harvest. There are very useful temperature charts comparing temps inside and outside the hoops. These techniques would be even easier to implement in warmer zones. You will also find a useful list of vegetables that can be grown using these techniques. Cannot wait to try growing carrots under the hoops this fall.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5In LibraryThing, I subscribed to SantaThing (a great idea) and one the book I received is about producing vegetable during Winter. Usually when you are gardening in our area, growing vegetable below 10 Celsius degree seemed unrealistic. While reading this book, I discovered plenty of ideas in order to grow vegetables during winter time. The book is a very nice overview of the vegetables being able to growth in Winter with many real examples. A very good book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very good book for those interested in gardening in northern climates (the author lives and works in Maine). More intended for an audience of growers (commercial), but plenty of tidbits for the backyard gardener or homesteader. Includes a lot of discussion of cold house (unheated greenhouse) and cool house (minimal heat to keep temps above 32 degF) techniques for growing vegetables, especially greens and cold-hearty vegetables. Great motivation to try many of the techniques myself.
