    PART ONE: CATS GONE WILD

As Kensei, Jamie Hattori was used to a lot of dangerous situations. She'd faced muggers and gods using her wits, her command over spirits, and her family's sword. It's how she tended to view the job of being a superhero.

Which is why she was not prepared to provide first aid to a homeless woman while an angel screamed at her. And it was starting to snow.

Pagan sinner! the angel screamed as Kensei willed the spirit of the woman's blood to stop spilling from the gash in the woman's thigh. You dare use your dark sorcery near sacred ground?

Something had attacked the homeless tent city that stood just outside the First United Methodist Church of Cobalt City. Kensei hadn't arrived in time to stop the attack, but she was in time to provide first aid until the professionals showed up. Of course, the guardian angel of the church didn't like a Buddhist superhero using her magical powers nearby.

What did this, anyway? Kensei asked as she applied gauze to the woman's wound. I've never heard about this huge of an animal attack in the neighborhood.

The woman winced and grunted out, Cat.

Like a ... mountain lion? Kensei asked. The wound had been pretty deep.

No, like a house cat. It was insane. Tore through here like the devil.

Footsteps approached behind Kensei, and she felt grateful that paramedics had finally arrived. She put the woman's hands over the gauze and said, Hold this in place.

When Kensei stood and turned, though, it wasn't paramedics she saw in front of her.

Pícara? she asked. The wind shifted and she could smell cooking meat, as she often did when the other hero was nearby.

Before her stood her infrequent frenemy, Sabrina Alvarez, in her costume as Pícara: defender of the people and avatar of St. Jeanne d'Arc. Farther on, she saw Pícara's three Templars: Justice, Temperance, and Fortitude. The Templars moved among the other injured homeless with first aid kits in hand. The church's guardian angel, visible only to Kensei, looked back and forth between the two heroes as if it couldn't decide who to yell at: the Buddhist or the Catholic.

Kensei and Pícara had parted on awkward terms, with the latter suggesting that they should stop working together. Jamie was less sure if that was a reflection of Pícara's avatar or Sabrina's denial of her feelings for Jamie. She also didn't know which option made her feel worse.

Pícara brushed the hair out of her face, snowflakes standing out against her black hair. Kensei. I didn't expect to see you here.

Kensei tried to stay calm and convince herself that she hadn't been staring at the other girl's hair. Spirit of the neighborhood. You?

I, uh, got visions from God that led me here. What's going on? All I got was images of people in pain, a dark furred monster, and a general sense of direction.
