My story: I HATE outlines, but I write them anyway

    Hi fellow writer

I've been writing commercially for almost 40 years. Ouch… I know. It's hard to believe, even

    for

    me

    .

In my early years of making a living from my writing I was much less productive than I could have been. I didn't know what I was doing with my writing, and looked on outlines with fear and suspicion. I envied writers who could outline, but I also knew that I could never become one

    of

    them

    .

    I was wrong.

In those years, the web was in the future. We got our information from libraries. Finally in the 1980s, I discovered bulletin board systems, and eventually CompuServe.

CompuServe had an amazing effect on my productivity. I met writers from all over the world on the CompuServe Literary Forum. The Lit Forum authors included then beginning, and later bestselling, novelist Diana Gabaldon, who published excerpts from her then work in progress on the Lit Forum. She was writing a book which went on to become the huge-selling Outlander series of books.

My biggest gift from the CompuServe Literary Forum was the knowledge that I wasn't alone, and that there wasn't something wrong with me because I hated outlines. I discovered that problems with outlining were normal for authors and for writers in general.

However, while struggles may be normal, it doesn't mean that you need to put up with them. Skill and confidence in creating outlines makes all your writing easier — and that's a great reason to develop the skill.

I decided to write this book because I remember my own struggles. If you hate outlining, please be aware that there is nothing wrong with you, and that you can outline in your own way. Even if your outlines look nothing like other people's outlines.

Hate outlining? It doesn't have to be

    that

    way

I crippled my writing because of my hatred of outlining. Today, many of my writing students feel the same way. They hate outlines, so they procrastinate. They fail to achieve their goals, and their motivation dissipates.

Let's fix that. You can hate outlines, and nevertheless

    create

    them

    .

After a while, creating outlines will cease to intimidate you. In fact, you'll become blasé about them.
