About this ebook

From the Sunday Times bestselling author comes an epic tale of love, passion and heartbreak.

In the summer of 1940, eyes are focussed on the skies above the South of England: the Battle for Britain has just begun. But Evie Lucas has eyes for no-one but a dashing young pilot called Tony. Evie has a glittering career as an artist ahead of her but seems only to be fascinated in sketching portraits of him…

Seventy years later, recently widowed art historian Lucy is putting the pieces of her life back together, and to do that she needs to uncover the mystery surrounding a painting in her home. As Lucy ties up the loose ends of one lifetime, she stirs up a hornet’s nest of history in another. Suddenly, Lucy finds herself in danger from people past and present who have no intention of letting an untold truth ever surface.

Some stories are buried in the darkness forever. Some are just waiting to be told…

I love time-slip novels and I have enjoyed Barbara Erskine's books in the past so I expected to like this book and I was not disappointed. It's the story of Evie Lucas, a young woman living on the family farm in Sussex during the Second World War. She meets and falls in love with airman, Tony Anderson, but things do not go well, not least because of Eddie Marston, Evie's on-off lover and the man who pretty much controls her career as a painter. In the current day, Lucy Standish has been given a grant to write Evie's biography but finds herself becoming embroiled in family secrets and sinister goings-on.I liked this book very much and particularly how fast-paced it was. It's quite a large book but I found it easy to read and the sections are quite short and intermingled rather than long sections set in each period. I did wonder, as the book got to about the 70% mark, how on earth it was all going to be resolved, but it was and very satisfactorily. I liked how the secrets were revealed with Lucy mostly discovering them as the reader did and it was a well-plotted and intriguing storyline. A very enjoyable read.
