Amelia Bedelia and her class go on a field trip to the woods for a hike and to explore nature. Amelia and her friends explore the wildlife during their hike, but have a few problems along the way that add humor to the narrative. This addition to the Amelia Bedelia series provides beginning readers with a lively story that helps build early literacy skills. The colorful cartoon drawings specifically illustrate the simple sentences that are written on each page. The narrative makes use of figures of speech and make frequent play on words such as “a snails pace” and “leaves are leaving.” The narrative supports an early reader’s learning by contextualizing these phrases with illustrations and explaining new vocabulary. However, this occasionally results in a disjointed narrative and lengthy blocks of text that may go beyond the skills of a truly beginner reader. This book is recommended as an additional selection and for early readers who are already fans of the Amelia Bedelia series.

Amelia Bedelia and her class are all hitting the trail, hiking to find something to contribute to a classroom nature table. In typical Amelia Bedelia fashion, her literal meaning making of words lends to comical misinterpretations. This easy reader provides young children with the opportunity to explore literal versus figurative language. The first page holds a letter to parents clarifying the different levels of books in the “I Can Read!” collection. This level one, beginning reading book contains sight words and simple concepts and text designed for youngsters who are enthusiastic to read independently. The illustrations are filled with beautiful autumn colors and compliment Amelia Bedelia’s carefree and cheerful personality.
