About this ebook
In this close-knit Amish family, nothing is as perfect as it seems . . .
When Viola Keim starts working at a nearby Mennonite retirement home, she strikes up an unlikely friendship with resident Atle, whose only living relative, son Edward, is living as a missionary in Nicaragua. Viola understands the importance of mission work, but she can't imagine leaving her father in the hands of strangers. Even though her family is New Order Amish, it's not the Amish way, and though she doesn't know Ed, she judges him for abandoning his father.
But when Ed surprises his father with a visit, Viola and Ed both discover an attraction they never expected. Despite her feelings, choosing Ed would mean moving to a far-off country and leaving her family behind. She can't do that. Her twin sister, Elsie, is going blind and will need someone to care for her all her life. Her family is reeling with the recent discovery that her grandmother hid her past as an Englischer. Her father seems forgetful and distracted—and to be harboring some secrets of his own.
Does Viola dare leave them all behind and forge her own life? Or will family ties mean her one chance at love slips away?

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Read about this in a review journal and was curious to see how an Amish romance would read. If you like your romances in the first blushes of love rather than hot and steamy, this will appeal. (Lorene is invited to long-lost love John's house one night...for soup. No, "soup" is not a euphemism for anything.) Chaste and homespun, with characters who experience universal inner conflicts and tests of their faith.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book is a wonderful start to a new series! I fell in love with the characters, even with their flaws, and felt as if I were part of the Keim family, experiencing their joys and their heartbreak. Viola Keim works at Daybreak, a retirement home in Berlin, Ohio. Her favorite resident, Atle Swarz loves to share letters from his son, Edward, who is missionary in Nicaragua. Viola has a low opinion of Edward whom she thinks is very full of himself as he brags about his work as a missionary. When Edward suddenly appears, she lets him know what he thinks of him. Meanwhile, her life at home is filled with turmoil. Mommi and Dawdi are hiding some mighty big secrets and so is her father, Peter. It seems as if these secrets will tear the family apart. Lovina and Aaron (Viola's grandparents) refuse to discuss their past with their children and grandchildren and when Peter's secret is finally released from the closet (or maybe I should say 'from the bathroom cabinet), Peter initially puts the blame on Viola. Viola also carries the burden of her twin's rapidly deteriorating eyesight, vowing that she I'll remain nearby forever in order to care for her.
