A Rolling Argument: Bosnian Stone Spheres
For the past few years mysterious stone spheres found all around Bosnia and Herzegovina havearoused fascination and controversy. The scientific dispute between the supporters and the opponentsof the project of the Bosnian Valley of the Pyramids was mainly related to the possible origin of theBosnian stone spheres, if ancient man somehow has played a role in their artificial creation or if theywere just a fabulous natural phenomenon. Fortunately, all the new evidence at hand, the whole issuerelated to the Bosnian stone spheres now appears much more complex and intriguing than previouslythought and will surely request a lot of scientific humility in order to unveil a mystery that hasendured for thousands of years. Still today, the phenomenon of the stone spheres represents one of the greatest mysteries for archaeologists and other scientific researchers. First stone spheres werefound in the early 1930's in the delta of the river Diquis in Costa Rica. Since then hundreds of stonespheres were found in different locations around the world. Many of them are composed of granodiorite, a hard intrusive igneous rock. The Bosnian stone spheres phenomenon was actualized in 2004 when Mr. Semir Osmanagić and histeam of independent researchers and historians found few stone spheres in different localities aroundthe country. First Bosnian stone spheres were found near Banja Luka. Going further more locationswith stone spheres have been discovered. In Teočak were found stone spheres made of granite, whilein the settlement Ponikve near town Vareš was discovered an irregular shaped stone sphere that was probably formed by magmatic rocks. Stone spheres weighing tons were also found in the village of Zlokuće, in Maglaj – in the village of Jablanica, while a small stone sphere is kept in the library of the Franciscan Monastery in Kraljeva Sutjeska near Kakanj. Numerous stone spheres were found inthe settlement of Grab near town Zavidovići. On that location were found tens of stone spheres.Their diameters vary between 50 cm (19.7 in.) and 2 m (78.7 in.), while their exact origin is notknown till these days.Recent discoveries however, made inZavidovići municipality and near the town of Olovo, offer first clear evidence of stonespheres with ceremonial functions and suggesta possible connection with the pyramidssituated inside the Visoko valley.

Latest research also suggests that ancient man used different types of rocks such as volcanic brecciaconglomerate, non-clastic sedimentary rocks (e.g. limestone) to build spherical or rounded stoneobjects: stone spheres and stones in the form of bread, also known as ‘
 Brotlaibs’
(loaf of bread).
