In Search of the Bosnian Sun God
“Where are you… enchanting young god?”
The relevance of sun cults and animistic attitudes towards natural objects as prevailing forms of understanding nature and reality are found across all prehistoric and ancient cultures around theworld. The
“Sun”
and the
“Moon”
are, like other physical objects, understood in terms of animateand conscious beings (or persons). Ancient man felt personal relations towards these heavenly bodies, worshiped them as gods and made sacrifices to ingratiate them. Sun and moon, trees and rivers, mountains and stars were worshipped as gods in ancient times to an amount that can hardly beexaggerated. The sun cults of the ancient Egyptians and Aztecs are typical examples to demonstratethese phenomena. Australian Aborigines, African Tribes and Native Americans believed that theirancestors were living on as stars in the heavens. The sun was worshipped as a god in every ancientculture, but nevertheless its importance varied a lot across ancient world.
“The sun is actually the only reasonable symbol for god. The sun is the father god who gives life toall appearances, the creator of all living things, the energy source of our world.”
Jung
Although many authors have written a lot about this subject, I do believe that it is necessary to throwa further and deeper glance on prehistoric artifacts like the Bosnian stone spheres and the sun andpyramid symbolism present in many ancient monuments found all over the country. I really doubtthat a deep understanding of the basic structures of this ancient world view and sacred symbolism, which survived many millennia and went unchanged through the rise of different cultures that onceexisted on the Bosnian territory, has been sufficiently researched and understood among scholars andthe academic establishment. While Bosnian academics are trying to maintain an obsolete belief system and completely ignore thatBosnian stone spheres are found in burial sites like those of Costa Rica, Costa Rican archaeologistshave evaluated together with foreign Universities the stone spheres of Costa Rica for UNESCO.So, how can “they” maintain such inappropriate behavior any longer? The central argument of this report however, will not be the widespread blindness in the Bosnianarchaeological establishment, but will present some important similarities of attitudes towards thesun as deity from the prehistoric artifacts (the stone spheres) and mediaeval monuments found inBosnia (obelisks, tombstones known as
ste

aks
etc.), and the symbolism and similarities which arestemming apparently from a common source of modes of thought. This paper wants to develop adeeper understanding of the available archaeological and historical evidence which account for thisreligious/ spiritual phenomena and will try to shed some light on a group of symbols, geometricshapes, motifs and objects present in the monuments in Baki

).Despite what we’ve been told, the evidence I’ve found suggests that the prehistoric stone spheres of Bosnia have had a profound impact on the funerary beliefs and sacred architecture of later religiouscults during mediaeval times and even during the Ottoman Turk period. Just like anywhere elsebeliefs, sacred geometric symbols and material objects passed from one particular culture to another.
