Red Ribbon Week began after the kidnappingand murder of Drug Enforcement Admini-stration (DEA) Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarenain 1985. Agent Camarena had been workingundercover in Guadalajara, Mexico for overfour years. His efforts led to a tip that re-sulted in the discovery of a multimillion dol-lar narcotics manufacturing operation inChihuahua, Mexico. The successful eradica-tion of this and other drug production op-erations angered leaders of several drugcartels who sought revenge. As a result, theymurdered key informants and then, on Feb-ruary 7, 1985, they kidnapped Agent Cama-rena and his pilot Captain Alfredo Zavala-Avelar (taken separately on the same day).In Agent Camarena's home town, Calexico,CA, the public outpouring of support turnedin to an organized community response inwhich citizens wore red ribbons. They be-came a voice for prevention in order to re-duce the demand for illegal drugs and illegaluse of legal drugs in America. The followingyear the California State PTA adopted theRed Ribbon Week campaign. Then, in 1988,Red Ribbon Week was recognized nationallywith President Ronald and First Lady NancyReagan serving as the first Honorary Chairs.Today, the Red Ribbon Week brings millionsof people together to raise awareness re-garding the need for alcohol, tobacco andother drug and violence prevention, earlyintervention, and treatment services. It is thelargest, most visible prevention awarenesscampaign observed annually in the UnitedStates.
