In addition to the keynote lecture on one of the latest discoveries in forensic research,there is a choice of seven mini-lectures, reflecting the diversity and wealth of researchthroughout the University.From helping the police to solve gun crime, getting to grips with the complexities ofinternational migration, taking a look at the evolution of life or weighing up the prosand cons of using social networking websites, the

will give you an insightinto all this, as well as taking a look at contemporary social and health problems.
Whether you are interested inthe past, present or future,this year’s
Homecoming
includes some of the mostexciting research projects inthe country today.

There is also something to suit everyone inour range of hands-on activities andinteractive demonstrations: learn how tomake great-tasting ice cream in minutes(Chemistry); experience a virtual 3D “flight”(Geography); meet Jane, a life-sized dinosaur(Geology); learn how to extract DNA thenfollow the clues at the CSI crime scene(Genetics) or choose from a host ofdemonstrations in Engineering.
All Change at the Percy Gee
You will be amazed at some majorimprovements to the campus. This summer,the Percy Gee Building will undergo a majortransformation to create one of the bestStudents’ Union facilities in the UK. Many ofthe day’s activities will centre on the building– which has changed very little since youwere here. Among the highlights there will bean opportunity to hear about theredevelopment plans, take part in a debatebetween current and former Student Unionsabbaticals and take home your own littlepiece of Leicester history at an auction in theRedfearn Bar.

This popular venue is closing down but notwithout a fight –EVERYTHING must go.Why not book table service, have a go atpulling your last pint or bid for the chance toring the last orders’ bell? And just like yourstudent days, everyone who buys a drink willtake home their own commemorative Redfearnpint glass – only this time, it’s allowed!

Dr John Bond, member of theUniversity’s Forensic Research Centre willdeliver the keynote address on“Fingerprints Forever”. Leicester’sresearchers have discovered a way ofvisualising a fingerprint which has beendeposited onto metal after the deposithas been removed. Named in
TimeMagazine
’s 50 greatest inventions of2008, Dr Bond will guide you throughthe process of retrieving fingerprintdetails from the casing of used bullets tohelp the police solve previously unsolvedcases. It will be of particular interest tothose who enjoy watching crime dramassuch as
CSI

Sculpture Exhibition
Homecoming
also marks the official opening of the 2009 Sculpture Exhibition at theBotanic Gardens. Entitled “A Celebration of British Sculpture”, this Exhibition is opendaily between 10.00am – 4.00pm, is free and open to the public. The entrance tothe Botanic Gardens is on Stoughton Drive South in Oadby and graduates are warmlyinvited to visit on any day until Sunday 27 September 2009.
