TELEFÓNICA LEADS THE DOW JONES SUSTAINABILITY INDEX FOR THE WORLD TELECOMMUNICATIONS SECTOR 
• In the economic dimension, which includes aspects of customer relations andcorporate governance, the Company is considered the best company in the industry.
 
• In this exercise, Telefónica is the only Spanish company that manages to be a worldleader in a sector of activity.• The Company has achieved a score of 86, which is 28 percentage points more than theindustry average.

 Telefónica has become the leading Telecommunicationscompany based on sustainability criteria according to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index(DJSI).
 
In its annual review, the rating agency Sustainable Asset Management (SAM)
,
basedon
 
corporate economic, environmental and social performance, has rated the Group with ascore of 86 (81.4 points in 2008), which is 28 percentage points more than the industry average."For Telefónica the sustainable management is not only a necessity but mainly anopportunity to differentiate and enhance our long-term value. To be leaders in sustainability inour industry by DJSI for us is the proof that we are doing things correctly. In fact, thismilestone comes three years ahead of what Telefónica committed in doing by 2011. That is,leading the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.  According to Abril, now the goal is to maintain the position reached: "We are part of thisindex for six years now, one of the most demanding indexes in the world, and always hashelped us to see our progress and identify areas for improvement. And so, we will continuebuilding on our 2009-2001 strategy, which includes three pillars: sustainability, innovation andtransformation".Similarly, Telefónica has been recognized as the best practice in seven key areas: risk &crisis management; standards for suppliers; reducing the digital divide; impact of telecommunications services in societies in which the Group operates; brand management;Codes of Conduct and anti-corruption policies, and corporate citizenship.In the

, Telefónica has reached a score of 93 points (82 in 2008), which is 31 percentage points more than the industry average.
