I recently had a very pleasant experience. I attended the world première of a documentary in which I’mfeatured. It has nothing to do with Alien Abduction, but rather harkens back to the mid 1970s whenscience fiction fandom for media offerings like Star Trek and Star Wars was in its infancy.It’s called “Back to Space-Con” and chronicles the first Star Trek Conventions in Northern California,with never before seen color footage. This was before the portable camcorder was invented, so much of that period was never recorded on tape. Fortunately a late night, horror movie host named Bob Wilkinsattended several of those conventions and brought along a cameraman from his TV station to film thejoyful creativity that was characteristic of science fiction fandom back then. That footage languished inthe Wilkins family garage for decades, until filmmaker Tom Wyrsch rescued it from oblivion and used itin this delightful documentary.The result is an hour and 14 minute visual record of a part of our cultural history that is meaningful to alarge part of the world population. (Do you know anybody under 60 who isn’t a secret Star Trek or Star Wars fan?) Although you won’t likely see it on the history channel, “Back to Space-Con” is a mustview for anyone who wants to learn about (or relive) those halcyon days of the old Star Trek conventions.Here is alink to the official website for the film.
