  • CREW: United States Trade Representative: Regarding Mongolia Forward's Ties to Gage LLC and Rep. Rehberg (R-MT): 11/20/2011 - Response Letter

On October 3, 2011, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests with the State Department, the Department of Commerce, and the United State Trade Representative, seeking information about an American company, Mongolia Forward, and its efforts to develop uranium mines in Mongolia. Mongolia Forward is closely tied to the government affairs firm, Gage LLC, and to Representative Denny Rehberg’s (R-MT) son, A.J. Rehberg. The information requested in these FOIAs will help CREW determine whether these agencies, possibly at the behest of Rep. Rehberg, took any actions to aid Mongolia Forward’s efforts.

  • Responsive Documents - CREW: Department of the Treasury: Regarding AIG Bonuses: 5/18/2012 - 2009 03 124_Final Redacted Documents

On March 18, 2009, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the Department of the Treasury, seeking documents related to AIG's payment of bonuses to its top executives. CREW also sought expedition of its request based on the growing public concern over the government's expenditure of billions of dollars to bail out troubled financial institutions, including AIG, and the question of whether the Treasury had advance notice that AIG intended to go forward with bonuses despite the company's current financial condition. Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, has called the bonuses "wholly unjustified."

  • CREW: Attorney General Eric Holder: Regarding DOJ Position on Criminal Campaign Finance Violations: 5/17/2012 - Exhibits

On May 17, 2012, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) sent a letter to Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr. asking that the Department of Justice (DOJ) clarify its position as to when DOJ will prosecute criminal campaign finance violations. On Monday, in the trial of former presidential candidate John Edwards, a DOJ prosecutor argued that determinations made by the Federal Election Commission (FEC) are “not relevant” to criminal charges. In contrast, in 2009, in response to a letter from CREW, the director of DOJ’s Election Branch refused to investigate a case claiming, “there must be no doubt that the Commission considers that the underlying conduct presents a [Federal Election Campaign Act] offense.”

  • CREW: Department of Commerce: Regarding Solar Panel Import Duties: 5/16/2012 - Response Letter

On May 10, 2012, CREW sent Freedom of Information Act requests to the Commerce Department, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the Department of Energy, the Department of State, and the Office of Science and Technology Policy seeking documents related to the Commerce Department’s preliminary decision to impose import duties on solar panels from China at much lower than expected levels. CREW sought expedition of the requests in light of the upcoming May 16 date on which Commerce will impose permanent anti-dumping duties on China. Critics have challenged the preliminary tariffs as not sufficiently protective of the interests of U.S. companies that manufacture solar panels. CREW also seeks to learn what role Jigar Shah and the Coalition for Affordable Solar Energy have played in the development of U.S. solar energy policy. Mr. Shah is the founder of SunEdison, the largest solar energy services provider in North America.
