This program is designed to entice teensto read. In order to engage their interestand to provide a spur to critical thinking,the book selections include those thatinvolve sensitive issues. The content of some of the titles may be more maturethan younger students may haveencountered. Please recognize that this isa voluntary reading program. Not everybook selected will suit every student. Ina democratic society, a variety of ideasmust find voice. As a reader, teens havea choice to read the more mature titlesor to close the book.

Mission Statement
The Mission of the Florida Teens Readprogram is to encourage Florida teens toread enjoyable, quality literature that willstimulate imagination, awaken curiosity,expand horizons, enhance verbal fluency,and foster critical thinking and a lifelonglove for reading and learning.
Guidelines
Books nominated for the Florida Teens Read Award will be chosen to:* Engage high school students.* Reflects interests of high schoolstudents* Represents a variety of genres, formats,reading levels, viewpoints, and ethnic andcultural perspectives* Include both books written for youngpeople and those written for adults.Ten to fifteen books will be nominated peryear. Books may be fiction or non-fiction and mustbe available in English.The copyright of the books will be within thelast three years.Titles will be appropriate for grades 9-12.Media specialists, teachers, teens, and FAMEmembers are eligible to nominate titles. It is understood that all books on the list maynot appeal to all teen readers; however,books selected for the list will be of interestto a general young audience and will dealwith relevant issues and topics of interest inthe lives of teenagers.Students will be encouraged to read all of thebooks on the list of nominations, but it isrecommended that students will have readthree books to be eligible to vote. Listening toa title will be considered having read it. Eligibility for voting will be determined on thehonor system
