What isswineflu?
Swine flu is
a new type of flu
. Because it's new, alltypes of people, old and young, healthy or not, willget sick from it more easily.
It is very similar to normal flu
. When you get flu, yourbody can't fight off other illnesses as easily. So if youhave flu, it's more likely you might get a moredangerous illness, like pneumonia.We think swine flu started in Mexico. Quite a fewpeople in different countries now have this new typeof flu, and it is spreading from person to person.
Weare trying to stop the problem getting any bigger.
 
Why is it calledswine flu?
It's called
swine flu
because it's similar to aillness pigs get. This does not mean that anypigs in the UK have it, or that you can catchit from healthy pigs. We are still looking intoexactly where it's come from.You may have heard swine flu being called a
pandemic
. This means that the illness hasspread widely, and is in more than onecountry. It does not mean that swine flu ismore harmful.
 
How can I avoidgetting swine fluor passing it on?
You can do
2 things
to help stop swine fluspreading:
•
use a paper tissue
whenyou sneeze or cough
•
wash your hands
withsoap and hot water oftenRemember to
put the tissue in the bin
whenyou're done with it!
You won't need a face mask
, because thesedo not protect you any more than using atissue, and washing your hands.
