Every few years, Chicago seems tomobilize massive public and privateenergy to combat an inner-city crisis. This cycle was renewed again inOctober 1992 after a small boy waskilled in Cabrini-Green. As hashappened in earlier years, there hasbeen a lot of talk, some programs havebeen initiated and after a while, theattention will move to another crisis incity leadership, the programs will beleft to fend for themselves, and theproblems will continue until the nextcrisis again brings attention to theissue.Cabrini Connections, a not-for-profitcorporation, was formed in October1992 by a group of volunteers seekingto pool their efforts to create a placewhere they and others could cometogether to help children have a betterfuture. The group pledged support tothe following philosophy. We will provide an organizedframework that empowers andencourages volunteers to give theirtime, effort, ideas and support toseeking life-changing solutions forchildren who live in an educationallydisadvantaged environment, such asCabrini-Green.Members of Cabrini Connections seek to support one another and othercommunity leaders throughout Chicagoand America in efforts to encourage, develop and fund volunteer-basedliteracy programs with the intent of empowering a growing number of community volunteers to becometutors, mentors and role models to at-risk students throughout the city.Weaccept that we will often differ inour goals or in our strategies forachieving them, but will seek not to judge one another's motivations butrather let time be our judge and let ourcombined efforts in support of one-another be honest and true in meetingthe broader goals of this alliance. Wedo not seek to dwell on that whichdivides us, but on that which unites us.And where honest effort results indifferent opinions, we will value thosedifferences and where common groundis not available, be supportive andencouraging in seeking separate pathsto our common goal.In all of our efforts we commitourselves to strive for simplicity inseeking solutions, reduction whenfacing bureaucracy, and creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship inidentifying and applying new solutionsto old programs.
Is your vision filled with hope for a brighter tomorrow? That's the vision of the children of Cabrini-Green, one of Chicago's public housing neighborhoods. And many of them have found a path that leadsto a brighter future. That path is Cabrini Connections.AtCabrini Connections, we strive to help each individual child realize his or her full potential. Weserve educationally disadvantaged youth by offering activities that stimulate their desire to learn, increase their self-esteem, and reinforce classroom teaching through lessons and friendships with adultrole models.Furthermore, we seek to promote the establishment and growth of similar programs throughout Chicago. There are thousands of educationally disadvantaged children in areas of Chicago beyond Cabrini-Green.They need adult support and programs like this too. Cabrini Connections intends to be a catalyst toempower volunteers and existing programs to share ideas and to create a continuing call to actionreaching corporations throughout the city, so more kids can receive the attention they deserve.
