Transfiguration of Our Lord (1905)
Matthew 17:1-9Time and place of the Transfiguration of Christ. Impression of this event on Peter. Howmany abuse the word of God in general, thus also what has happened here.
1
But we agree withPeter and say:
It is good to be with Jesus!
1.
He is the Son of God
.a. He is the Son of God.
. The Transfiguration itself was a revelation of the divine gloryof Jesus
2
;
. the cloud, as a sign of the gracious presence of God
3
, was a proof that Jesus, whoHimself always had borne witness as the Son of God, actually was the Son of God;
. the voiceof the Father testified to it in clear words.
4
b. He is the incarnate Son of God, who
. has assumed our nature
5
;
. He took Peter
6
,James and John
7
with Him.
8
How good it must be with such a Jesus!2.
He is our Savior
.a. We cannot be saved by the Law.
. Moses and Elijah were representatives of the OldCovenant. Moses had given the Law, Elijah was zealous for the Law, but they were not able toprevent transgression of the Law.
. Even now, no one can be saved by the Law.
9
b. Jesus is our Savior.
. He has fulfilled the Law for us
10
;
. He has atoned for sin andborne punishment
11
, i.e., purchased salvation for us;
. He gives it to us through faith by meansof the Gospel.
12
Oh, then, let us then disregard all our own action for salvation and see Jesus only, take aheartfelt confidence in Him
13
, so we will know how good it is with Jesus.3.
He has also earned for us transfiguration of the body
.a. He was transfigured.
