Introduction
Mr Speaker, today in my first sitting week as Chief Minister I would like to takethis opportunity to outline to the community a statement of my government’spriorities over the next 12 month period.Mr Speaker through this statement today I will set out this government’s toppriorities. I will also outline the key projects that we are working on in order toprogress and meet the challenges these priorities bring - and I will also setclear goals for which to track our progress and report back to the communityon how we are going in doing what we said we would do.We are a Government with a focus on preserving and improving the quality of life that Canberra people enjoy.We ask for and we listen to the aspirations and the concerns of Canberrapeople, and we respond to their needs.Mr Speaker, this Government’s purpose and direction, our foresight andstrength, what we stand for, are embodied in our priorities.It is important to point out, Mr Speaker, that these priorities link into thedeliberations and findings of the ‘Time2Talk’ community consultations whichoccurred last year.Mr Speaker, it is also important to state up front that these priorities do notencompass all the work the ACT Government currently performs nor all theGovernment will do.

In addition these are not priorities that go to the mechanics and structure of our Public Service although significant work is underway here with the ‘OneACT Public Service’ reforms and more efficiently accommodating our publicservice. This is work that the community expects us to do as a matter of courseand this work is being done.Mr Speaker, we live in a time poor world where we all lead busy lives. As Chief Minister I am very keen to identify the best way to let the community knowwhat their government is working on, how we expect to deliver against thechallenges identified and importantly how we will measure the progressagainst these priorities.Mr Speaker, the Government’s priorities in 2011-12 cover eight servicedelivery areas, with 52 specific projects and 51 measureable targets.The Government’s priorities are:

To ensure that Canberra is
a liveable, sustainable city
o
That its people enjoy
timely access to healthcare
o
That there is
help for those most in need
o
That there are
housing options for all Canberrans
o
That Canberra people have
skills for life and for our economy
o
That we have
a robust local economy and a balanced tax system
o
That there is
improved access to and use of public transport
, and
o
There is
continued improvement in public safety
Mr Speaker, these priorities will be progressed within the continuing work of Government –that is, they further our election promises, further the aims of
