Speaking Points:
Theresa BoyleSr. Vice PresidentStrategy & Business Development1.We are so excited about growing our services in Covington. As a member of thiscommunity for nearly 20 years, we have truly watched the community grow up aroundus. MultiCare has a strong, vested interest in the realization of all the great planningwork done by the commission to form a truly vibrant town center. We want to makesure the outcome of this plan fits with the intent of this planning work.2.Our ED Project will include the latest in medical technology, and at this time 22 privaterooms. We fully expect there to a number of ambulances coming and going from ourfacility. For example, at two of our existing facilities, we see a number ambulanceseach day. One of our busy ED’s, located in East Pierce County, MultiCare GoodSamaritan Hospital, saw an average of over 35 ambulances per day in 2009. One of oursmaller ED’s located at Allenmore Hospital in Tacoma saw an average of 9 ambulancesin 2009.3.ED’s do not belong in any kind of town center – they are busy, chaotic places whereevery last second of time in vital. In taking a look around the State, you do not seeemergency departments in the town centers of other areas. This is because they arenot pedestrian friendly operations and do not fit with what people want in a towncenter. There are no hospitals located within town centers, and in Issaquah where afreestanding ED is located, they chose not to locate that facility in any of thepedestrian oriented areas.4.We urge this commission to ensure the planning work and intent of the developmentof a town center is realized, and we end up with a vibrant town center full of the typeof development that fits with this vision. The stage is set in Covington to make leapsand bounds toward a City we are all proud to be a part of. These are legacy decisionsthat will have a tremendously positive impact on generations to come.
