TheFederalHighwayAdministration(FHWA),inconjunctionwiththeDistrictDepartment
of
Transportation(DDOT),proposesmodificationstoKStreettocreateatransportationfacilitythatenhancesthemobility,throughputcapacity,andeconomicvitalitywithinthedowntownWashingtonCentralBusinessDistrict.
In
accordancewiththeNationalEnvironmentalPolicyAct(NEPA),theFHWAandDDOTpreparedanEnvironmentalAssessment(EA)whichwasreleasedforagencyandpublicreviewonSeptember29,2009.ApublichearingwasheldonOctober14,2009.Subsequently,aFinalEAhasbeenpreparedtofullyaddressallagencyandpubliccommentsreceived.TheproposedmodificationstoKStreetareintended
to
accommodatemultimodaltraffic(bus,automobile,bicycle,andpedestrian)thatcurrentlyusesthecorridor.Theproposedactionwouldachievethefollowing
obj
ectives:ProvideefficienttravelalongKStreetforalltransportationmodes,includingtransit,pedestrians,bicycles,andautomobiles;EliminateroadwayinfrastructuredeficienciesalongKStreetandimprovingmobilityandsafetyforallKStreetusers;andConstructa"GreenStreet"usingexceptionalurbandesignprinciplesandinnovativeandenvironmentallysustainabledesignmethods.
