Former BBC correspondent and editor (1977–2000). During this period, set up the BBC Bureau in Kabul in the early 1990s, was the corporation’s resident correspondent in Afghanistan, and reported from Pakistan, Syria, Sri Lanka, and India. Before turning attention to West Asia in the 1990s, covered conflicts in Sri Lanka and India in the 1980s. Author of several books: the latest are: "Overcoming the Bush Legacy in Iraq and Afghanistan" and "Breeding Ground: Afghanistan and the Origins of Islamist Terrorism." Articles have appeared in publications such as the Economist and the Daily Telegraph of London. Continues to write for many journals and newspapers, among them: Al-Ahram Weekly, CounterPunch, History News Network (George Mason University, Virginia), Informed Comment, the Palestine Chronicle and Z Magazine. Takes a keen interest in U.S. foreign policy, great power rivalries, South and West Asia.
