This is the second article of a planned seven article set containing a overview of my new book about philosophy, which includes studies of the human soul, and looks at science & reason versusChristianity & religion. The first article in the set appearshere. The book is entitled "God, Nature, andthe Human Soul, A Personal Philosophy", and it examines Christianity & religion versus reason &science with an aim to keep the best of both. It can be ordered frommy website as well as by clicking on the links in this article that read:"God, Nature, and the Human Soul, A Personal Philosophy" (AnAnalysis of Science & Reason Versus Christianity & Religion). This second article will present anoverview of Chapter 2, which concerns the issue of putting our knowledge in context, so that we are better able to proceed on our philosophical quest of looking at Science & Reason Versus Christianity &Religion."God, Nature, and the Human Soul, A Personal Philosophy" (An Analysis of Science & Reason VersusChristianity & Religion) starts with an analysis of the scope of the known universe. The knownuniverse appears to contain over 10 billion galaxies, each containing between about 100 million to over one trillion stars. And that is only what our present technology can observe."God, Nature, and theHuman Soul, A Personal Philosophy" (An Analysis of Science & Reason Versus Christianity &Religion)goes on to note that the limits of what we observe are presently believed to be set by theamount of space and time passed by light in its traversal from there to here, since we gain informationabout the universe from telescopes and other instruments that use various forms of light in their analysis. And while the presently prevailing philosophy (but not the philosophy expounded in "God, Nature, and the Human Soul, A Personal Philosophy", An Analysis of Science & Reason VersusChristianity & Religion) dictates that we know much about the size of the universe, it remains true thatthe philosophy that prevailed with the ancients made a similar claim. But "God, Nature, and the HumanSoul, A Personal Philosophy" (An Analysis of Science & Reason Versus Christianity & Religionmentions that the ancients knew that the Earth was the center of all, and that it was surrounded byspherical shells in relatively close proximity to the Earth. They knew that there was a great harmony inthe motions of these spherical shells, since they had calculated the motion of the small dots of light oneach shell to an exquisite accuracy. But we now know that despite their excellent calculations andaccuracy of the data, the ancients were completely wrong. So even though we are now aware of much, much more than were the ancients, a proper humility informs us that we may still be seeing an almostinfinitesimal portion of all that is."God, Nature, and the Human Soul, A Personal Philosophy" (AnAnalysis of Science & Reason Versus Christianity & Religion)goes on from this viewpoint next."God, Nature, and the Human Soul, A Personal Philosophy" (An Analysis of Science & Reason VersusChristianity & Religion) next looks a bit deeper at the boundaries of our knowledge. Even granting thefact that we may not be aware of all of the boundaries of the universe, we must further reflect upon thefact that what we really do know about it is also quite small in relation to what exists. "God, Nature, and the Human Soul, A Personal Philosophy" (An Analysis of Science & Reason Versus Christianity &Religion) points out that throughout mankind’s historical record, no man has ever ventured further thanthe sole moon orbiting our sole planet within a single solar system. We have managed to send probes tothe outer reaches of our solar system, but it remains true that even in those endeavors, we have onlyreached out to distances that light travels in hundreds of minutes, whereas the outer reaches of theknown universe are around 100 billion light years away. (See http://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0310233submitted for publication.) Hence,"God, Nature, and the Human Soul, A Personal Philosophy" (AnAnalysis of Science & Reason Versus Christianity & Religion)calculates that the ratio of what we believe to exist compared to where we have sent probes is 500 trillion. (There are about 500,000minutes per year. Since we have sent probes about 100 minutes away, we have sent them to about1/5,000 of a light year away. 100 billion divided by 1/5,000 is 500 trillion, or 5x1014.)
