I upload documents to Scribd that I think are valuable for the development of humanity. Now, for some of these documents I may not have obtained explicit rights for their publishing. But to my understanding the documents have either an explicit Open License (CC, public domain, GFDL, etc ) or they are such public documents that one is allowed to distribute based on common sense (such as public government documents). Some documents might also have been uploaded to ensure the availability as well as accessibility of these documents. For example, it's not uncommon that servers in developing countries are down or they are slow to access. It also may be that a document buried somewhere without proper links to it doesn't get the publicity it deserves. So, I may have wanted to help the original publisher in such case. Lastly, it's a pain in the butt to view some PDF documents as PDFs. Scribd among other similar services provide just so much smoother reading experience that it makes all the sense in the world to upload these documents that I've selected. And I didn't even mention the nice clean and relatively short URLs. Please let me know if there's a document that you think I shouldn't have uploaded and I'm happy to take it down; if I don't have the explicit rights for its publishing, that is.see more
