Dear Mr. Stientjes,
Your June 9, 2008, letter to FBI agent William Long has been referred to me.I filed a civil forfeiture action against the Liberty Dollar seized property in the UnitedStates District Court for the Western District of North Carolina on May 29, 2008. Enclosed arethe Complaint, the docket, and the Court's Order staying the case for six months pending thecompletion of the criminal investigation.Note that the Stay protects the integrity of the United States' criminal investigation aswell as the Fifth Amendment rights of any possible claimants. When
a civil
forfeiture case has been filed, Rule 41 of the
criminal
rules is usually
inappropriate. See also Fed. R. Crim. P. 1(a)(5)(B).
Sincerely,
GRETCHEN C.F. SHAPPERT
