Sum m ary
A narea ground resistance survey w as m ade over a row of five 20 by 20m . squares in
th e field to the south of C astlehill P lantation o n th e estate of S ir R obert C lerk in
P e n ic u ik . T h e fie ld n a m e is re c o rd e d a s S o u th C ro ft. S e e Illu s . 7 .1 .
A erial photographs (R efs. 8.1 and 8 .2 ) show at least tw o circular features as dark
m a rk s to g e th e r w ith a lin e a r p a rc h m a rk th a t a p p e a rs t o ru n t o th eN E fro m th e la rg e r
o f th e tw o circles.
Seasonal excavation on C astlehill over the period from sum m er 2003 to 2007 has

p ro d u c e d fin d s th a t p ro b a b ly in d ic a te th a t C a s tle h ill is a L a te Iro n A g e s ite b u t n o n e of these finds can be classified as dom estic. T ools, charcoal and slag suggest that the s ite c o u ld w e ll h a v e h a d a n in d u s tria l p u r p o s e w ith s k in a n d le a th e r w o rk in g p o s s ib le . T h e a e ria l p h o to g ra p h c irc u la r fe a tu re s lie a b o u t lo o m , fro m th e p re s u m e d in d u s tria l area and w ere considered as possible residences for those involved on the w ork site.
