T he "castle" of castlehill stands on sharply rising ground to the southw est of the
c o tta g e s a t C o rn to n o n th e P e n ic u ik e s ta te a t N G R N T 2 0 8 3 7 5 8 7 5 3 .
O n its n o rth e rn sid e th e g ro u n d slo p e s ste e p ly d o w n to th e C o rn to n (o r H a rk e n ) B u rn
and on the southern side less steeply to a field adjacent to the river N orth E sk.
T h e p ro m o n to ry g e o lo g ic a lly is b a s e d o n tw o p a ra lle l rid g e s o f lim e s to n e c o v e re d in
glacial sands and gravels. T he ridges are faulted at the point w here they overlook
C ornton. T he ground slopes m ore gently aw ay to the southw est but at a position som e

a m a rk e d b a n k o n e ith e r s id e . M e th o d

T he decision w as m ade to m ake a topographic and ground resistance survey of as m u c h o f th e a r e a o f th e p ro m o n to ry a s w a s p o s s ib le . T h e a re a is s till a p la n ta tio n o f m a tu re , m a in ly d e c id u o u s , tr e e s w ith m a n y o ld tr e e s fa lle n a n d lim itin g e a s y a c c e s s .

T he fallen trees and areas w here the ground dropped aw ay sharply at the edges of the
prom ontory restricted the ground resistance survey.W hen the area survey had been
com pleted tw o linear array resistance surveys w ere m ade to explore features to a

g re a te r d e p th th a n th a t s h o w n in th e a re a s u rv e y . O n th e b a sis o f th e in fo rm a tio n fro m the tw o surveys it w as decided to open tw o trenches, one alongside each of the array lin e s . D u e t o th e lim ite d tim e f o r d ig g in g o n ly th e firs t o f th e s e w a s o p e n e d .

T he area resistance survey involved taking readings in each square m etre in a series of

2 0 b y 2 0 m e tre s q u a re s e x c e p t w h e re s lo p in g g ro u n d p re v e n te d th e c o m p le tio n o f a s q u a re .
