T hree area ground resistance surveys w ere carried out to the w est of the S ociety's
e x c a v a tio n s a t C ra m o n d . T h e e x c a v a tio n s c o m p ris e d a s e rie s o f tre n c h e s th a t ra n
a p p ro x im a te ly n o rth fro m th e R o m a n fo rt t o th e b a th h o u s e . T h e re p o rt o n th is
e x c a v a tio n is in p re p a ra tio n .
T he first tw o surveys w ere m ade in an attem pt to follow the line of a substantial
m o rta re d w a ll th a t c ro s s e d th e m o st n o rth e rly o f th e s e tre n c h e s (s e e D E S 1 9 9 7 ,3 2 )

T he first survey in 1999 appeared to show the continuation of the w all for som e 8
m e tre s w ith a p o s s ib le tu rn th ro u g h a rig h t a n g le . T h e s e c o n d , m o re c o m p le te s u rv e y
m ade later in the year, show ed a diffuse high resistance area m ore suggestive of
d e m o litio n d e b ris T h e re a d in g s o f th e s e tw o s u rv e y s h a v e b e e n c o m b in e d a n d
fo llo w in g a s e rie s o f re s is tiv e lin e a r a rra y m e a s u re m e n ts th e d e m o litio n d e b ris th e o ry
a p p e a rs m o re lik e ly .
T he third area resistance survey show s the w estern end of the vennel asalin e o f

m e d iu m t o lo w re s is ta n c e v a lu e s w ith a h ig h re s is ta n c e a re a o f p ro b a b le p a v in g ro u n d th e w e ll a n d p o s s ib ly b u ild in g re m a in s , a t its w e s te rn e n d . O th e r h ig h re s is ta n c e a r e a s are probably due to dem olished buildings across w hich the transect cuts.
