1 . Sum m ary
The initial objective of the project w as to survey and record a well at the w estern end of
t h e H o p e t o u n E s t a t e b u t t h i s w a s e x p a n d e d t o a d d a g r o u n d r e s i ~ t a n c e s u r v e y w h e n a
cropm ark w as found on an R C A H M S aerial photograph. T he eastern lim b o f the
cropm ark w as adjacent to th e w ell. T his part of the cropm ark w as under grass but w as

crossed obliquely by a new farm track; the ground resistance m easurem ents w ere m ade to th e n o rth a n d s o u th o f th is tra c k a c ro s s th e lin e o f th e c ro p m a rk . T h e s o u th e rn sid e o f th e cropm ark w asi na p lo u g h e d a re a w h ic h w a s fie ld w a lk e d a n d p ro d u c e d little i n the w ay of finds. O n the north side of the flat topped hill, that w as enclosed on three sides by the

cropm ark, the rem ains of a bank and ditch w ere found; th e croprnark is not apparent o n
th is s id e o f th e h ill a n d th e re la tio n s h ip b e tw e e n b a n k , d itc h a n d c ro p m a rk is u n k n o w n .

A bout 250m . to the north of the cropm ark a linear feature w as observed that crossed a fie ld u n d e r c u ltiv a tio n ; t w o v e ry lim ite d a r e a s o f g ro u n d re s is ta n c e m e a s u re m e n t w e r e taken across this alignm ent w here it em erged onto a field under grass.
