DESERT
• At least every other week, DESERTreceives an inquiry for John D. Mitchell'sbook on lost mines, which has been outof print for some time. Good news forlost treasure enthusiasts is that Mitchellhas written another series of lost minearticles, to be published in DESERT andlater to be incorporated in a new book.Setting for most of this series is Arizonaand Sonora, Mexico. Some two dozen ofMitchell's earlier lost mine tales of Cali-fornia, Arizona and New Mexico ap-peared in DESERT beginning in 1940.This month's story by Charles Kellyon his search for the reported treasurecache of the Donners in Utah's salt des-ert is but one small facet of the author'sresearch into the history of the early pio-neer trails of the West. Most of his find-ings regarding the history of the Hast-ings Cutoff and other early trails acrossthe Great Salt desert were published inhis book
Salt Desert Trails,
which con-tained much new information on theDonner party.DESERT readers soon will read a newversion of the fabled Seven Cities of Ci-bola. Robert A. Barnes, of Gallup, NewMexico, has written a story based on arecent discovery of a group of ruins onthe Arizona-New Mexico state linewhich are believed to be remnants of the"golden cities" sought by Coronado fourcenturies ago.
