painting in my Gold Strike series; butno town sprang up at Wahmonie! Ihad our ore samples assayed in LosAngeles. They ran 25c to the ton ingold! Not rich enough to pay for theshoe leather we used in picking them
up!
No town grew in Wahmonie becausewithin three short months GeorgeWingfield's crew came to the end ofthe vein of good ore, drifted a fewyards—and pulled out of camp. Every-one else followed, leaving what theycould not carry to the lizards, coyotesand the buzzards.Our $170 lot has a 34-year-oldgrowth of new creosote bush. Ourclaims are gone with the wind. Butour memories are rich.In 1938 I painted "The Gold Rush"from those memories. A year later,after showing the picture in Los An-geles at the Biltmore and in the AlliedArtists of America show in New York,the idea came to me to paint "TheMining Camp," using the same char-acters, of course, as in "The GoldRush." This I did, and a few yearslater "The Mining Town" demandedto be painted—again with some ofthe same characters ... the slimgambler and his gal-friend, the pros-pector with his burro. . . scolding a certain friend ofmine.By now we had a house trailer, andto get material for the "Town" weheaded one day for Randsburg andRed Mountain on California's MojaveDesert. The old stores and saloonsand mine mills were there to be usedat will. I sketched the stores and thechurch at Randsburg, the Kelley Mineat Red Mountain, and into the paintingthey went. They are real. The gamblerand his dame seem to have prosperedand are waiting for the stage to takethem to Los Angeles for a high oldtime.After all, this is how Wahmoniemight have looked if the "big strike"had turned out to be another Goldfield—or a mine like Randsburg's fabulousYellow Aster. When I was a 14-year-old at Elizabeth Lake, I heard thehomesteaders talk of the Yellow Aster.
