Orange County Fair
"We want to make the public moreaware of this interesting hobby and,by doing so, we are also givingjewelers, gemologists, and rockcollectors an opportunity to sharetheir hobby and profession withothers at the Fair this year." OrangeCounty has numerous clubs for therockhound and mineral collector.The 1985 Orange County Fair Gemand Minerals Show will feature 53classes for open and adult amateurexhibitors as well as competitivedivisions for juniors through the ageof 17. Mineralogical societies, rock
clubs,
dealers, and professionals havealso been invited to enter thenoncompetitive divisions. Competitivedivisions for opeand amateurexhibitors will consist of mineralspecimens, faceted work, lapidarywork, jewelry, educational exhibits,and fossils.The entries will be evaluated by aqualified panel of judges chosen bythe California Federation ofMineralogical Societies. The judgingcriteria will consist of correctness of
labeling,
showmanship, quality ofmaterials, rarity of specimens,workmanship, orientation, variety ofwork, originality of design, andvariety of material.

One of the newest attractions at the1985 Orange County (California) Fairwill be a building devoted to thefascinating hobby of gem and mineralcollecting along with rockhound andtreasure hunter oriented exhibits andcontests."We hope to present a veryprofessional and attractive exhibit tothe public," said DepartmentSupervisor Kay Myers, an Anaheinresident who is an avid rockhoundand jewelry student in her own right.In addition, there will be dailylectures and demonstrations oflapidary work, faceting, polishing,andgeode cutting. There will be a "Hands
on"
panning booth for childrenwhere they can pan for fossils andcrystals. DESERT MAGAZINE willstaff a booth to answer questionsregarding places to go, ghost towns,prospecting, and the desert in general.This marks the first year that gemsand minerals has its own building atthe Orange County Fair. In the past,it was featured as a part of the craftsad hobbies show. This expansion to abuilding of its own reflects thepopularity of this interesting andeducational hobby.The first Orange County Fair washeld at Santa Ana in 1890 and was alivestock exhibition. The fairgroundsare now located on what was oncethe Santa Ana Army Base, which wasone of the largest military trainingcenters in the nation. Today there islittle evidence of the site's militaryhistory except for a Memorial Garden*The Fair will be held from July 12 to
21,
1985 at the Orange County Fairand Exposition Center, 88 Fair Drive,Costa Mesa, California. This is withineasy driving distance from mostplaces in the Southern California
area.
This years theme is "Its Wildand Wolly", referring to the variousactivities involving sheep, such assheep shearing, Future FArmers of
America
and 4 - H Club shows,sheep dog trials, and much more.Entertainment at the 1985 Fair canonly be described as impressive. Seniorcitizens will be admitted for $1.00Monday through Wednesday only.However, a special day, Thursday,July 18 is Denny's Senior CitizensDay and admission will also be $1.00.Fair hours are Noon to Midnight onweekdays, 10 AM to midnight onweekends.All in all, the 1985 Orange CountyFair promises to be one of the best.We at DESERT MAGAZINE lookforward to meeting you at the Gemand Minerals Building.
