The president stopped at Rick's Cafe, a couple of miles from the Oceana Naval
Air Station, and sat down to drink ice water and chat with some military wives.
They sat at a six-top, two tables pulled together -- Obama, Kaine, Warner and
three women in capris and sandals.
"Prior to this administration, you never heard about military families," said
Jennifer Farlin, who sat to the president's left. She cited the Obamas' Joining
Forces program. "It makes me feel very supported."
"I love the fact that this administration is focusing more on military families.
Prior to this," she said, "we felt lost."
Sometimes employers don't want to hire military families, Farlin said.
"Companies a lot of the time are more than happy to help," said Obama,
mentioning the programs that give help to military families, like giving
discounts and memberships to them.
"But they haven't been asked, and there's not a structure for it," the president
said.
Farlin said she'd used the Disney discount.
She said she is from Detroit, prompting a Bears v. Lions joke on the president's
part.
Jon Favreau, Alyssa Mastromonaco and David Plouffe were outside the cafe.
As he came out, Obama was greeted by about thirty people from the strip mall,
Oceana East, where Rick's is located. One lady had run down from the 2nd Image
Hair Salon, her hair twisted up in bright orange and yellow curlers.
"Anybody gettin' their hair done?" Obama shouted as he walked up.
Obama worked the rope line, and held a chunky baby on his hip, asking him, "How

BACKGROUND INFORMATION from the campaign on military spouses

Norfolk Roundtable with Military Spouses

Jennifer Farlin from Chesapeake, VA
Jennifer is a military spouse. Her husband is a Commander in the Navy and
currently deployed overseas. She has two boys ages four and seven. Jennifer
owns a staging and interior redesign business, Bella Home Staging. She started
her business about four years ago because she wanted to help other people,
specifically military families, deal with the stress of frequent moves (staging
to sell) and then turning their new houses into homes however temporary the
lodging.

Jennifer says that being a busy mom of two little boys and handling the daily
challenges of military life gives her excellent insight into how best to empower
military families as she understands firsthand the complexities of constant
moving.

As a result of the tax cuts President Obama has signed into law, the Farlins
will have received a total of about $4,100 in tax relief over the Presidents
first term.

Amber Hebert from Chesapeake, VA
Amber is a military spouse. Her husband is an active duty member of the Navy,
serving for almost 17 years. She works full time and is currently pursuing dual
masters degrees in Business Administration (MBA) and (M.S.) Management with a
minor in Human Resources from the University of Maryland University College. She
uses the Post 9/11 GI Bill to help pay for her education. With her husbands
deployments, Amber is often a single parent to her two sons, ages 12 and five.

As a result of the tax cuts President Obama has signed into law, the Heberts
will have received a total of about $3,900 in tax relief over the Presidents
first term. That includes $1,600 from the Making Work Pay tax credit and about
$2,300 from the payroll tax cut.
