Marches were held inTel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa andother cities. Two separate events were held inTel Aviv. Thousands of peopleparticipated in one of the rallies, organized by social activist DafniLeef. That rally culminated in alarge demonstration outsidegovernment offices on KaplanStreet. Protesters called for moresocial justice and bettertransportation, and held signs insupport of the LGBT communityand African migrants.“ We want a fair society,” Leef was quoted by Haaretz as saying.“ Today we are also celebrating.Suddenly, when people take to thestreets they understand that theyhave power and that they areright.”Another event, dubbed the “Million Man March”, was alsobeing held in a different part of the city. Some 500 Jews and Arabs took part in another rally in Haifa, calling on the Israeli governmentto do more for social justice andspend less on the military.Slogans included “ Money for theneighborhoods, not for thesettlements” and “ Money forwelfare, not for wars.”Around 200 protesters took partin a similar event in Jerusalem, while some 300 activists rallied inBe’er Sheva. The protests were being held tocommemorate the beginning of last year’s tent city rallies againstsocial injustice. On July 14, 2011,Dafni Leef and nine otheractivists set up tents on Tel Aviv’supmarket Rothschild Boulevard. The number of tents quicklymushroomed and soon tens of thousands were flocking to thestreets of major Israeli citiesprotesting against the rising costof living and calling for thereinstatement of the welfare state. The movement reached a climaxin September, when almost half amillion people– ten per cent of the country’s population–took tothe streets in a single night. TheNetanyahu government promisedto go along with some of theprotesters’ demands, and soon thenumber of tents and other sit-indemos started waning. In October, the authorities moved in todismantle the remaining tents inTel Aviv. However, activists have beensaying that the government haslargely ignored its promises toaddress the onerous economicsituation many Israelis are in.In June, Leef and some of hersupporters tried to re-establish thetent city on Rothschild Boulevardbut were prevented from doing soby the police. Authorities thenmoved in to arrest Leef, and avideo showed police grapplingwith the social activist as she layon the ground.Thousands of people took to thestreets of Tel Aviv the followingnight, this time protesting bothpolice brutality and socialinjustice. That rally turnedviolent, with police attackingprotesters, and demonstratorssmashing windows and blocking amajor highway. It remains to be seen whether thissummer’s social protests gainenough momentum to match thescale of last year’s protestmovement, dubbed the “ summerof discontent” by much of themedia. This entry passed through theFull-Text RSSservice — if this isyour content and you're reading iton someone else's site, please readthe FAQ atfivefilters.org/content-only/faq.php#publishers.FiveFiltersrecommends:IncineratingAssange - The Liberal Media GoTo Work .[unable to retrieve full-textcontent]

WASHINGTON — In the face of 41 straight months of unemployment above 8 percent,President Obama is calling for atax hike on nearly a millionbusiness owners. In the WeeklyRepublican Address, U.S. Sen.Rob Portman (R-Ohio) saysthere’s a better path forward:“The way to an Americaneconomic comeback, the way tohelp those out of work today finda paycheck, is to unleash theforces of job creation inAmerica.” Portman calls forcomprehensive tax reform, debtreduction, scaling back burdensome regulations andincreasing domestic energyproduction. “The government-knows-best approach of the pastfew years has given us theweakest economic recovery sincethe Great Depression. It’s time toturn things around. We know wecan restore America’s greatnessby harnessing the power of freepeople and free enterprise,” hesays. The Weekly RepublicanAddress is available in both audioand video format and isembargoed until 6:00 a.m. EST,Saturday, July 14, 2012. Theaudio of the address is availablehere, the video will be availablehereand you may download theaddresshere. A full transcript of the address follows:“I’m Rob Portman, a UnitedStates Senator from Ohio.“This week, 13 million Americanswon’t go to work, not becausethey’re on vacation, but becausethey can’t find jobs.“As a candidate, Barack Obamapromised to help these Americansfind work.“And exactly three years agotoday, he pledged ‘To get thiseconomy back on its feet.’ Hesaid about the economy, ‘Give itto me.’“Well, America did give it tohim. We gave him the ability toturn things around. And threeyears later, the results are in:“Unemployment is over 8 percentfor the longest period since theGreat Depression. And it’sactually higher than that becauseso many Americans are sodiscouraged—they’ve stoppedlooking for work.“Families are earning less andtheir homes are worth less.“We recently learned that lastmonth, Americanmanufacturing—once a reliablesource of good-paying jobs—declined for the first timein three years.“This year, more than a millionyoung Americans graduated fromcollege. And here’s the stark reality: half of them can’t find afull-time job to match theirdegrees. Half.“It didn’t have to be this way.“For the past three years or so,we’ve known that the greatestchallenge before us as a nation isan economy that’s just notproducing enough jobs.“But instead of focusing ongrowing jobs and reigniting oureconomy, President Obamafocused on growing governmentand tried to remake the UnitedStates into the image of the debt-laden countries of Europe.“His approach has been morespending, more regulation, andhigher taxes.“You don’t hear much from thePresident anymore about the twobiggest initiatives of his time inoffice. One was passing the so-called stimulus bill. He and hiseconomic team promised thatspending almost $1 trillion of taxpayer money would getunemployment down to 5.6percent by today. Instead, it’s 46percent higher. Measured by theirown standards, his policies havefailed us.“The other initiative was pushingthrough the unaffordable healthcare spending law, which willgrow the government by $2.6trillion, and do somethingPresident Obama promised hewould never do: hit millions of middle class Americans with amassive tax increase.“Raising taxes on employers andthe middle class, growinggovernment at the expense of freeenterprise, piling on newregulations that increase the costof doing business—these burdensmake it harder, not easier, tocreate jobs in America.“President Obama increasedgovernment spending andborrowing—to levels we’ve neverseen before. On his watch, thenational debt has grown to arecord $16 trillion—making itlarger than our entire economy.“We need to face facts: we’regoing broke. Washington isracking up debts that are beingpassed on to our kids and ourgrandkids. If we continue at thispace, we’ll be the first generationof Americans to leave the nextgeneration worse off than us.That’s wrong. It’s unfair. And ithas to change.“Based on this record, you’d think that President Obama would’velearned from his mistakes.Instead he seems to be doublingdown.“Today, instead of lifting theburden on job creators, thePresident is once again calling fora massive tax increase on nearly 1million small businesses thatemploy tens of millions of Americans. I guess he still thinksthe private sector is doing justfine. Well, the private sector isnot fine. And raising taxes on jobcreators during a jobs shortagemakes about as much sense ascutting off the water supplyduring a drought.“President Obama says this taxhike is about fairness. Well, underhis plan, many of these smallbusinesses would pay higher taxesthan Fortune 500 companies. How’s that fair? President Obamalikes to talk about the BuffettRule. Well, here’s a Buffett Rulethat all Americans should be ableto support: mom and popbusinesses should not pay ahigher tax rate than Fortune 500corporations like WarrenBuffett’s.“The good news is there’s a betterpath forward.“The way to an Americaneconomic comeback, the way tohelp those out of work today finda paycheck, is to unleash theforces of job creation in America.The source of new jobs isn’tgoing to be the bureaucracies of Washington, but rather thecreativity, ingenuity, and hardwork of the American people.“Let’s reform our complex, outdated tax code by eliminatingloopholes, lowering tax rates, andrewarding hard work, innovation,
