College and Career Planning for Elementary School Strand: Decision-making, goal-setting, planning, and problem-solving Competencies: Describe the skills necessary for making decisions and choosing alternatives in planning for and pursuing educational and tentative career goals. Understand the importance of planning and preparing for potential careers in the world of work. Describe how beliefs contribute to goals. Demonstrate understanding of the purpose and nature of work. Identify ways they have control over themselves and the quality of their life.

Lesson Topic: College and Career Choices Grade Level: 5-6 TEKS: 1. 6.1G research educational options and requirements using appropriate technology. 2. 6.3C develop an awareness of financial aid, scholarships, and other sources of income to support postsecondary education; 3. 6.3D discuss the impact of effective college and career planning; 4. 5.24 Research/Gathering Sources. Students determine, locate, and explore the full range of
relevant sources addressing a research question and systematically record the information they gather.

Length of lesson: 30 minutes

Materials: PowerPoint presentation, College and Career Journal Page Lesson: Students define how their current beliefs and interests can potentially become careers. Procedure: Students conduct lesson individually in computer lab using PowerPoint. Students take a short quiz to measure their self-awareness and knowledge of college and career vocabulary and choices. Based on the quiz, students choose a category and conduct guided research of their chosen career field, noting educational requirements, and salary potentials. Students research colleges with programs in that field, and take notes on location and tuition. Students take a posttest to see if they have increased self-awareness, and knowledge about college and university attendance. Resources: Various websites linked in PowerPoint..
