Notingthatdevelopmentshouldnotbeattheexpenseofenvironment,theGlobalEnvironmentalOutlook(GEO-5)hasheldthatwhilethereisconsiderablesuccessinozonelayerreplacement,littleprogresshasbeenmadeinstemmingclimatechange.ThefiftheditionoftheGlobalEnvironmentalOutlook(GEO-5)ofUnitedNationsEnvironmentProgrammepointstosignificantprogressonlyinfourofthepossible90goalsandobjectivessettoachieveglobalsustainabledevelopment.Thereportcautionsifhumanitydoesnoturgentlychangeitsways,severalcriticalthresholdsmaybeexceeded,beyondwhichabruptandgenerallyirreversiblechangestothelife-supportfunctionsoftheplanetcouldoccur.Italsopointedoutthatsomeprogresshastakenplaceinsomegoals,includingexpansionofprotectedareaslikenationalparksandreducedeforestationbutthereislittleprogressingoalsclimatechange,desertificationanddrought,whiIefurtherdeteriorationwaspostedinotherIikestateofcoralreefsandwetlands.Thereportpointsoutthateffortstoeliminateproductionanduseofsubstancesthatdepletetheozonelayer,removalofleadfromfuel,increasingaccesstoimprovedwatersuppliesandboostingresearchtoreducepollutionofmarineenvironmentaretheonlygoalsthatrecordedprogress.TheGEO-5callsformorespecifictargets,withquantifiableresults,acrossabroaderrangeofenvironmentalchallenges.TheGEO-5remindsworldleadersandnationsmeetingatRio+20whyadecisiveanddefiningtransitiontowardsalow-carbon,resource-efficient,job-generatingGreenEconomyisurgentlyneeded.InAsiaPacific,thereportalsocallsforagreaterfocusonpoliciesthattargetthedriversofenvironmentaldegradation-populationincrease,unstainableeconomicgrowth,urbanisation,consumptionandresourceuse.ThereportstatesscientificevidenceshowsEarthsystemsarebeingpushedtowardstheirbiophysicallimitswithevidencethattheselimitsarecloseandhaveinsomecasesbeenexceeded.Ofthenineinternationallyagreedatmosphericgoalsreviewed,thereportsays,significantprogresshasbeenmadeineliminatingsubstancesthatdepletetheozonelayerandthephase-outofleadingasolinebuttherehasbeenlittleornoprogressonseriousissuessuchasindoorairpollutionandclimatechange.Indoorairpollutionfromparticulatematterisresponsiblefornearly2millionprematuredeathsannually,including900,000deathsinchildrenundertheageoffive.Ofthesedeaths,1.3millionoccurinlow-incomecountries,especiallyinSouthAsia,SouthEastAsiaandAfrica.Outdoorparticulatemattermayberesponsibleforaround3.7milliondeathsannuallywhilegroundlevelozoneisresponsiblefor700,000respiratorydeaths,over75percentofwhichoccurinAsia.Source:TheEconomicTimes•MembersofISEBarerequestedtointimateanychangeintheircontactaddressincludingpostal,Email,Fax,TelephonetoISEBoffice.•Allcorrespondenceshouldbeaddressedto:TheSecretary,InternationalSocietyofEnvironmentalBotanists,NationalBotanicalResearchInstituteCampus,Lucknow-226001(India).•E-mail:isebnrilko@sify.comWebsite:http://isebindia.com
