Inventions By EdisonBy:Haleigh KrantzI wrote this essay on three inventions Thomas Alva Edison created. The MotionPicture Camera,The Phonograph, and Waxed Paper. All of these are brilliant intheir own way. Waxed paper is useful for cooking adn Edison created an efficientway to make it. And what would be do without cameras and films? Then we have thephonograph which was basically an early stereo or CD player. Here is the history of these three apparatus' .The first machine patented in the United States that showed animatedpictures or movies was a device called the "wheel of life" or "zoopraxiscope".Patented in 1867 by William Lincoln, moving drawings or photographs were watchedthrough a slit in the zoopraxiscope. However, this was a far cry from motionpictures as we know them today. Modern motion picture making began with theinvention of the motion picture camera. The Motion Picture Camera takes a rapid series of photographs on a strip offilm, once developed it can be projected as a motion picture.Human eyes and brainmerge the separate pictures together to generate the illusion, this is called the"persistence of vision".Basically, when the shutter is open, the film isilluminated. When it is completely covering the film gate, the film is being movedone frame further by one or two claws which advance the film by pulling it throughthe holes. One of the "Downfalls" is that most film cameras do not record soundinternally; instead, the sound is captured separately by a precision audio device. The earliest known invention of a phonographic recording device was thephonautograph, invented by Frenchman douard-Lon Scott de Martinville and

patented on March 25, 1857. It could transcribe sound to a visible medium, but hadno means to play back the sound after it was recorded. Seems kinda useless doesn'tit? The device consisted of a horn or barrel that focused sound waves onto a membraneto which a hog's bristle was attached, causing the bristle to move and enabling itto inscribe a visual medium. Initially, the phonautograph made recordings onto alamp-blackened glass plate.Thomas Edison announced his invention of the first phonograph, a device forrecording AND replaying sound, on November 21, 1877 and he demonstrated the devicefor the first time on November 29 . Edison's early phonographs recorded onto atinfoil sheet phonograph cylinder using an up-down ("hill-and-dale") motion of thestylus. The tinfoil sheet was wrapped around a grooved cylinder, and the sound wasrecorded as indentations into the foil. Edison's early patents show that he alsoconsidered the idea that sound could be recorded as a spiral onto a disc, butEdison concentrated his efforts on cylinders, since the groove on the outside of arotating cylinder provides a constant velocity to the stylus in the groove, whichEdison considered more "scientifically correct".Wax paper (also called waxed paper) is a kind of paper that is made moistureproof through the application of wax.The practice of oiling paper in order to make it semi-translucent or moisture-proof goes back at least to medieval times. Thomas Edison claimed to have inventedwax paper in 1872, but what he really invented was a cheap and efficient means tomanufacture such paper.Wax paper is commonly used in cooking, for its non-stick properties, and wrappingfood for storage, as it keeps water out or in. It is also used in arts and crafts.Another use of wax paper is to apply wax to objects. By rubbing the wax paper onan object the wax will rub off the paper and onto the object. This is useful foradding a slight polish or to reduce friction. As you can see,Inventions in the 1800's were amazing. Opening the door for
