ABSRACT The aim of our present study was to establish bilayer tablet formulation containing rosuvsastin calcium as immediate release (IR) and metoprolol tartrate sustained release (SR). The bilayer tablet was prepared by direct compression method. Development of bilayer tablet of rosuvsastin calcium and metoprolol tartrate was carried out in three stages. Sustained layer were prepared by using different viscosity grade of HPMC (HPMC K4M & HPMC K100M) as polymers and immediate release layer were prepared by using super disintegrants such as sodium starch glycolate. The tablets were evaluated for physicochemical properties viz. hardness, friability, weight variation, thickness, and drug content uniformity and subjected to in vitro drug release studies. In vitro release studies were carried out by USP TypeII paddle apparatus. The results showed that the formulation MT3 containing metoprolol tatrate with the polymer concentration of HPMC K4M (10 %) and HPMC K 100M (30 %) showed sustained release for a period of 24 hours and rosuvastatin calcium containing 12 % of sodium starch glycollate shows immediate release for a period of 2 hours. Among the five IR formulations (R1 R5), R5 was chosen for better release (100.24% for 2 hours) and Among the five SR formulations (MT1 MT5), MT3 was chosen for better release (100.79% for 24 hours). Thus, MT3 and R5 formulations were combined together to make bilayer tablets.
