National Grid is advising they are preparing for high electric usage during this event. During high usage times, mechanical failures can occur unexpectedly. Please attempt to conserve energy where ever possible. At this time, Jefferson County is not scheduling any cooling shelters. It is recommended if you need to go to a cooler place, consider locations such as governmental buildings, libraries, shopping malls and restaurants which are mostly all air conditioned. It is also recommended that if your house is not air conditioned, to consider if possible staying with friends or family to get out of the heat.

Heat related illnesses can be fatal if not identified and treated in time. Everyone is reminded to stay well hydrated and drink plenty of water even if you dont feel thirsty. Pay special attention to the very young and the elderly as well as family pets and animals. If dehydration or a heat related illness is suspected call 911 immediately and get the person to a cooler location!

This week the area will be experiencing extremely high temperatures and extremely high humidity Jefferson County Fire and Emergency Management in conjunction with Jefferson County Public Health Service are advising all residents and visitors to be aware of these conditions. Heat related illness is particularly dangerous to infants, young children, people over 65, and those that take certain medications.
