Mercado and TeodoraAlonzo Realonda.The Rizal familybelonged to

 a town aristocracy duringSpanish Philippines.
Teodora was Rizal’s
first teacher then
tutors
were hired tolook after hiseducation, the firstwas MaestroCelestino.Rizal took interest inpainting, sculpture,and poetry. His firstpoem was entitled
“SaAking Mga Kabata”
 written when he waseight years old.

JOSe Rizal matriculated at
Ateneo de Municipal
where hefinished his
Bachelor of arts(equivalent to present high school)
in 1877 with a rating of 
Excellent.
Itwas also at this time that he met hisfirst love named
Segunda Katigbak.
 His love for poetry deepen especiallyafter the release of his mother fromprison, in honor of her, he wrote
“MiPrimera Inspiracion”
.
His professorsparticularly
Fr. Francisco Paula deSanchez
inspired him to writepoems.
May 3, 1882
to continue his medical studies he left for Europeboarding
Djemnah.
He settled in Madrid,
Spain.
He completed hisLicensure in Medicine at
Central University of Madrid.
He alsotook part in the Propaganda Movement and started writing for it.His first article written in Spanish soil was entitled
Amor Patrio.
 March 1883, Jose Rizal joined Masonry intending to use this as ashield to combat friars. He had written
“Science, Virtue andLabor”
as a Mason.
November of 1885
Jose Rizal moved to
Paris,
France to specialize in
ophthalmology and worked as an assistant in Dr. Louis de Weckert’s
clinic until February 1886. Music played a part in Filipino reunions,Jose was said to composed
Alin Mang Lahi.
 When Jose was 11 yearsold, his brother Pacianowitnessed themartyrdom of 
GOMURZA
on February17, 1872 which Pacianorecounted to Rizal. Thisincident left a mark in
Rizal’s consciousness.
 Teodora was alsoarrested on charge onattempt to poison her
sister-in-law.
 Jose had his grand tour of 
Europe
thenfinally decided to return to thePhilippines in
August 1887
. Hepracticed medicine and came to be
known as “Doctor
Uliman
”.
Governor-General Terrero after readingthe novel sent the copy to the Facultyof 
University of Sto. Tomas
and then tothe Permanent Commission of 
Censorship
for examination andrecommendation. He also assigned
JoseTaviel de Andrade, a Spanish lietenant
 
to look after Jose Rizal’s safety.
In February 1888, Jose left thePhilippines for his second sojournabroad.

, he transferred to another Europeancity in
Berlin,
Germany for several reasons.July 1886, Jose Rizal wrote his first letter to
Ferdinand Blumentritt,
an Austrian who wasinterested with Philippine languages that started abeautiful friendship.On
March 21, 1887
his first novel,
Noli Me Tangere
 came off the press. The novel was dedicated to
theFatherland.
It was through the help of 
MaximoViola
that the printing costs were defrayed. Themain character in the novel was
Crisostomo Ibarrawho
arrived from his study abroad. A chapterentitled
“Elias and Salome”
was deleted due toprinting costs.He then enrolled at
University of Sto. Tomas
in
April 1877
.During his first year he took up
Philosophy and Letters
andshifted to
Medicine
in his second year.He joined the literary contest sponsored by the ArtisticLiterary Lyceum in 1879, his entry was entitled
“A La JuventudFilipina”.
The following year he joined another literary contestwith his entry entitled
“El Consejo de los Dioses”
and won firstplace.He also fell in love with his cousin
Leonor Rivera.
