CHAITANYAMahaprabhuwasborninMayarpurinthetownofNadia,justaftersunsetontheeveningofthe23rdFalgun,1407AdventofSakabdaansweringtothe18thFebrurary,1486oftheChristianera.ThemoonwaseclipsedatthetimeofHisbirthandpeopleofNadiawerethenengaged,asusualonsuchoccasions,inbathingintheBhagirathiwithloudcheersofHaribol.HisfatherJagannathMisrawasapoorBrahminoftheVedicorder,andHismotherSachiDeviwasamodelgoodwoman,bothdescendedfromBrahminstocksoriginallyresidinginSylhet.MahaprabhuwasabeautifulChildandtheladiesofthetowncametoseeHimwithpresents.Hismother'sfather.PanditNilambarChakravarti,arenownedastrologer,foretoldthattheChild-wouldbeagreatPersonageintime;andhetherefore,gaveHimthenameVisvambhar.TheladiesoftheneighborhoodstyledHimGaurHarionaccountofHisgoldencomplexion,andHismothercalledHimNimaionaccountoftheNimtreenearwhichHewasborn.BeautifulastheladwaseveryoneheartilylovedtoseeHimeveryday.AsHegrewup.HebecameawhimsicalandfrolicsomeLad.AfterHisfifthyear,HewasadmittedintoaPathsalawhereHepickedupBengaliinaveryshorttime.EarlyAnecdotesMostofHiscontemporarybiographershavementionedcertainanecdotesregardingSriChaitanyawhicharesimplerecordsofHisearlymiracles.Itissaidthat,whenHewasaninfantinHismother'sarms,Heweptcontinually,andwhentheneighbouringladiesandHismothercriedHaribol,beusedtostop.ThustherewasacontinuationoftheutteranceofHaribolinthehouse,foreshowingthefuturemissionoftheHero.Ithasalsobeenstated,that,whenHismotheroncegaveHimsweetmeatstoeat,Heateclayinsteadofthefood.Hismotheraskingforthereason,Hestatedthat,aseverysweetmeatwasnothingbutclaytransformed,Hecouldeatclayaswell.HismotherwhowasalsotheconsortofaPanditexplained,thateveryarticleinaspecialstatewasadaptedtoaspecialuse.Earth,whileinthestate

Krishna.Inthemeantime,theLadcameandateupthecookedrice.TheBrahminastonishedattheLad'sactcookedagainattherequestofJagannathMisra.TheLadagainateupthecookedricewhiletheBrahminwasofferingthericetoKrishnawithmeditation.TheBrahminwaspersuadedtocookforthethirdtime.ThistimealltheinmatesofthehousehadfallenasleepandtheLadshowedHimselfasKrishnatothetravelerandblessedhim.TheBrahminwasthenlostinecstasyattheappearanceoftheObjectofhisworship.IthasalsobeenstatedthattwothievesstoleawaytheLadfromHisfather'sdoorwithaviewtopurloinHisjewelsandgaveHimsweetmeatsontheway.TheLadexercisedHisillusoryenergyanddeceivedthethievesbacktowardsHisOwnhouse.Thethievesforfearofdetection,lefttheBoythereandfled.AnothermiraculousacthasbeendescribedoftheLad'sdemandingandgettingfromHiranyaandJagadishaalltheofferingstheyhadcollectedforworshippingKrishnaonthedayofEkadasi.Whenonlyfouryearsofage.HesatonrejectedcookingpotswhichwereconsideredunholybyHismother.HeexplainedtoHismotherthattherewasnoquestionofholinessandun-holinessasregardsearthenpotsthrownawayafterthecookingwasover.Theseanecdotesrelatetothetenderageuptothefifthyear.ScholasticCareerInHiseighthyear.HewasadmittedintotheTolofGangadasPanditinGanganagarclosebythevillageofMayapur.Intwoyears,HebecamewellreadinSanskritGrammarandRhetoric.Hisreadingsafterthatwereofthenatureofself-studyinHisOwnhouse,whereHehadfoundallimportantbooksbelongingtoHisfatherwhowasaPandithimself.ItappearsthatHereadtheSmritionHisown,andtheNyayaalso,incompetitionwithHisfriendswhowerethenstudyingunderthecelebratedPanditRaghunathSiromani.swoonedatthenameofKrishnaandbehavedasaninspiredmanundertheinfluenceofHisreligioussentiment.IthasbeendescribedbyMurariGupta,aneyewitnessthat,HeshowedHisheavenlypowersinthehouseofSrivasPanditinthepresenceofhundredsofHisfollowerswhoweremostlywell-readscholars.ItwasatthistimethatHeopenedanocturnalschoolofKirtaninthecompoundofSrivasPanditwithHissincerefollowers.ThereHepreached,thereHesang,thereHedancedandthereHeexpressedallsortsofreligiousfeelings.NityanandaPrabhuwhowasthenapreacherofVaishnavismandwhohadthencompletedhistravelsalloverIndia,joinedHimbythattime.Infact,ahostofPanditpreachersofVaishnavismiallsincereatheart,cameandjoinedHimfromdifferentpartsofBengal.NadianowbecametheregularseatofahostofVaishnavaAcharyaswhosemissionitwastospiritualizemankindwiththehighestinfluenceoftheVaishnavacreed.PreachingandSankirtanThefirstmandatethatHeissuedtoPrabhuNityanandaandHaridaswasthis:"Gofriends,gopreachingandthroughthestreetsofthetown,meeteverymanathisdoorandaskhimtosingtheNameofHariwithaholylifeandyouthencomeand
 
reporttoMeeveryeveningtheresultofyourpreaching."Thusordered,thetwopreacherswentonandmetJagaiandMadhaithetwomostabominablecharacters.TheyinsultedthepreachersonhearingMahaprabhu'smandatebutweresoonconvertedbytheinfluenceofBhaktiinculcatedbytheirLord.ThepeopleofNadiawerenowsurprised.Theysaid,NimaiPanditisnotonlyagiganticgeniusbutHeiscertainlyaMissionaryfromGodAlmighty."FromthistimetoHis23rdyear,MahaprabhupreachedHisprinciplesnotonlyinNadiabutinallimportanttownsandvillagesaroundHiscity.InthehousesofHisfollowers.Heshowedmiracles,taughttheesotericprinciplesofBhaktiandsangHisSankirtanwithotherBkaktas.HisfollowersofthetownofNadiacommencedtosingtheHolyNarneofHariinthestreetsandbazars.Thiscreatedasensationandrouseddifferentfeelingsindifferentquarters.TheBhaktaswerehighlypleased.TheSmartaBrahminsbecamejealousofNimaiPandit'ssuccessandcomplainedtoChandKaziagainstthecharacterofChaitanyaasun-Hindu.TheKazicametoSrivasPandit'shouseandbrokeaMridanga{khol)thereanddeclared,thatunlessNimaiPanditwouldceasetomakenoiseaboutHisqueerreligion,heshouldbeobligedtoenforceMohammedanismonHimandHisfollowers.ThiswasbroughttoMahaprabhu'snotice.Heorderedthetownpeopletoappearintheevening,eachwithatorchinhishand.Thistheydid,andNimaimarchedoutWithHisSankirtandividedinfourteengroups,andonHisarrivalinKazi'shouse,HeheldalongconversationwiththeKazi,andintheendcommunicatedintohisheartHisVaishnavainfluencebytouchinghisbody.TheKazithenweptandadmitted,thathehadfeltakeenspiritualinfluencewhichhadcleareduphisdoubts,andproducedinhimareligioussentimentwhichgavehimthehighestecstasy.TheKazithenjoinedtheSankirtanparty.TheworldWasastonishedatthespiritualpoweroftheGreatLordandhundredsandhundredsofhereticsconvertedjoinedthebannarofVisvambharafterthisaffair.SannyasaItwasafterthisthatsomeofthejealousandlowmindedBrahminsofKuliapickedupaquarrelwithMahaprabhuandcollectedapartytoopposeHim.NimaiPanditwasnaturallyasoftheartedPersonthoughstronginHisprinciples.Hedeclaredthatpartyfeelingandsectarianismwerethetwogreatenemiesofprogress,andaslongasHeshouldcontinuetobeaninhabitantofNadiabelongingtoacertainfamily,Hismissionwouldnotmeetwithcompletesuccess.HethenresolvedtobeacitizenoftheworldbycuttingoffHisconnectionwithaparticularfamily,casteandcreedandwiththisresolutionHeembracedthepositionofaSannyasiatKatoaundertheguidanceofKeshavBharatiofthattown,onthat24thyearofHisage.HismotherandwifeweptbitterlyforHisseparation,butourHerothoughsoftinheart,wasastrongPersoninprincipleHeleftHislittleworldinHishousefortheunlimitedspiritualworldofKrishnawithmankindingeneral.AfterHisSannyasHewasinducedtovisitthehouseofSriAdvaitaPrabhuinSantipur.SriAdvaitamanagedtoinviteallhisfriendsandadmirersfromNadiaandbroughtSachiDevitoseeherSon.Bothpleasureandpaininvadedherheart
