Advertising
is a one-way communication whose purpose is to inform potentialcustomers about products and services and how to obtain them. Every major medium isused to deliver these messages, including: television, radio, movies, magazines,newspapers, video games, the Internet, and billboards. Advertisements can also be seenon the seats of grocery carts, on the walls of an airport walkway, on the sides of buses,heard in telephone hold messages and in-store public address systems.As the economy expanded during the 19th century, advertising grew alongside. In1841, the first advertising agency was established by Volney Palmer in Boston.advertisers. But N. W. Ayer & Son was the first full-service agency to assumeresponsibility for advertising content. N.W. Ayer opened in 1875, and was located inPhiladelphia.
 Advertising and technique progress
When radio stations began broadcasting in the early 1920s, the programs werehowever nearly exploded. This was so because the first radio stations were established byradio equipment manufacturers and retailers who offered programs in order to sell moreradios to consumers. As time passed, each individual radio program was usuallysponsored by a single business in exchange for a brief mention of the business name atthe beginning and end of the sponsored shows.This practice was carried over to television in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Afierce battle was fought between those seeking to commercialise the radio and peoplewho argued that the radio spectrum should be considered a part of the commons – to beused only non-commercially and for the public good. Nevertheless, public radio doesexist and In the early 1950s, the Dumont television network began the modern trend of selling advertisement time to multiple sponsors. Previously, Dumont had trouble findingsponsors for many of their programs and compensated by selling smaller blocks of advertising time to several businesses.The 1960s saw advertising transform into a modern approach in which creativitywas allowed to shine, producing unexpected messages that made advertisements moretempting to consumers' eyes. The Volkswagen ad campaign--featuring such headlines as"Think Small" and "Lemon" (which were used to describe the appearance of the car)-ushered in the era of modern advertising by promoting a "position" or "unique selling proposition" designed to associate each brand with a specific idea in the reader or viewer's mind. This period of American advertising is called the Creative RevolutionThe late 1980s and early 1990s saw the introduction of cable television and particularly MTV.Marketing through the Internet opened new frontiers for advertisers andcontributed to the "dot-com" boom of the 1990s. Entire corporations operated solely onadvertising revenue, offering everything from coupons to free Internet access. At the turnof the 21st century, the search engine Google revolutionized online advertising byemphasizing contextually relevant, unobtrusive ads intended to help, rather than inundate,users. This has led to a plethora of similar efforts and an increasing trend of interactiveadvertising.
