pdf to jpgCHAPTER 1
Drake stood at the open door to the shop for a long moment, watching asJade stacked cans. She was intent on her work, straining on her tiptoes, completely oblivious to his presence—or the world around her. It madehim smile. Obviously she was bored, stacking the cans far too high. If achild should happen to bump the bin, her whole display would cometoppling down, most likely on the child’s head.Dismissing all thoughts of the hypothetical child, Drake wet his lips, admiring his unsuspecting neighbor’s contour. She’d grown up while hewas away. Now she was all womanly with rounded curves, her longauburn hair gleaming to distraction in the sunlight. He found it hard tobelieve the inviting vision before him was the wild tomboy he’d wrestledwith, dousing with snowballs in winters past. Suddenly, to his discomfort,he found himself wanting to wrestle with her in a completely different way—not in the snow, but his bed. The desire made him cock an eyebrow.Something new was in the mix.“You’re stacking those too high,” Drake said at last, finally making hispresence known.Jade whipped around, in her surprise to see him, disturbing the display.Drake grabbed her by the shoulder, pulling her out of harm’s way just asthe whole tower of cans toppled to the ground.“Look what you made me do!” Jade grumbled, giving her friend a playfulswat across his chest. Then, liking the feel of where her hand had justbeen, she coquettishly put it back, letting it rest there for a moment.
She raised her eyebrows. “My goodness, that university is making a manout of you, after all.”Drake grinned, playfully posing his hands as though preparing to followher gesture. “Shall I reciprocate? I assure you, I’d be delighted toreciprocate.”.”He waited, uncertain if Jade had grown in mind as well as body. Heremembered all too well flirtatious remarks deemed in her directionsending her bolting like a skittish colt. She had always been that way, brazenly coquettish—as long as the exchange was all one sided. His lips quirked into an amused smile. As he expected, a flush crept up herneck and into her lovely cheeks.Jade quickly snatched her hand away. “I heard you would be coming,” sheannounced, trying to hide the disconcertment his teasing produced bykneeling to pick up the mess of cans. “How is your father? Mother goes tosee him practically everyday—and I try to see him when I can but … Howis he?”Drake shrugged wearily. “He’s dying.”Jade nodded. She knew that. Once having said it, she realized it was astupid question. It’s just that seeing Drake again—him being even morehandsome and virile than she remembered—turned her brain to mush. Andher heart was distracting as well, doing some sort of fluttery dance. She just knew it was going to leap right out of her chest.
