Bill Cochran, DWR Oroville Chief: presented a Discussion of the building of the Oroville Dam and its sig-nicant projects. He mentioned that this project has been recognized as the project of the Millennium. Theland area that collects water for the drainage above the Oroville Dam is 3,611 Square miles. He mentionedthe natural Feather River through Oroville sees water ows of 600 cfs to 150,000 cfs due to the variety of downstream and ood control needs. Big Bend Dam (search: Kayaking Big Bend Dam, Lake Oroville, CA)was shown at the beginning of Lake Oroville on North Fork of Feather River. Oroville Dam is 770 feet talland 6920 feet built with 80 million cubic yards of clay earth, concrete and rock material. Cost to build at235 Million Dollars to in 1965. it is the Tallest Dam in United States. One of the Used 161,000 hp pumptubbiness has been placed for display at the old observation parking lot. The Gated spillway has 8 gates thatare 33 feet tall and 17 feet wide that open into the spillway that is 180 feet wide and 27 feet tall. Flows of 296,000 cfs are possible when the lake level is above the 813 foot elevation. He discussed the 1700 foot longEmergency Spillway weir which if needed ows over 350,000 cfs but has never been used.He also presented pictures of the Ronald Robie Power plant and the Diversion Dam which is 1300 feetlong an 143 feet tall. He discussed the mitigation process for the Ricer farmers and the purpose of the Ther-malito Afterbay and Forebays.Bill also explained the current project to improve the maintenance and performance of the River Valvesunder the Powerplant and the difculties of the project with high pressure and deep water diving tasks.Many Thanks to Bill and his staff for the presentation and the Movie “ Building of the Oroville Dam “.This meeting was educational and entwining.
