[488][3.][Tug.6] Having their hands baresignifies the genuineness of their conduct.Vainglory is an expert at covering up anddarkening virtues, always hunting for gloryfrom men and chasing away faith. ‘How canyou believe,’ it says, ‘when you accept gloryfrom one another and do not seek the glorywhich comes from God alone’ (John 5:44).Goodness has to be chosen for its own sake,not for anything else. Failing this, whatevermotivates us to do good will turn out to befar more important in our eyes than the gooditself, and what could be more ridiculousthan this, to suppose and to claim that thereis anything better than God?
