Grothman Rips Madison City Council: Plans on Introducing Legislation if Court Does Not Act First

Madison: Today Senator Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) chastised the Madison City Council for imposing yet another obligation on people who have the gall to do business within the Madison city limits. As passed by the council last night, Madison landlords will soon be obligated to give voter registration forms to all new tenants. Landlords are already over regulated in this state. To give them one more hurdle to jump is sheer arrogance. It is my belief the legislature dealt with this sensitive problem of landlords in State Statute 12.09(3)*. Obviously, one could argue that by the nature of their relationship a landlord who gives a tenant a registration form is compelling someone to vote. One could see an 18 year old college student feel they were being intimidated into voting with such a requirement, said Grothman. Senator Grothman added, I assume most freedom-loving judges would feel the same way. Of course the greater concern is that one more time an elected body gives Wisconsin business owners something else to do in their already busy and over-regulated lives. It is my sincere wish that the citys landlords find a way to strike a blow for freedom and avoid this new imposition.

* State Statute 12.09(3): No person may personally or through an agent, by any act compel, induce, or prevail upon an elector either to vote or refrain from voting at any election for or against a particular candidate or referendum.
