Information Exchanges Electronic Publishing When will I implement my plan?

My target date for implementing this GLP is possibly the last week of February, 2012.

Surprisingly, everything went as planned. We took pictures for the project starting on the 15th of February and completed the project the first week of March.

My plan is to use my two GATE students as participants for this project. When I actually implemented the plan, I did end up using my two GATE students, but I also chose a few other of my students to participate. I ended having two small groups of 3 participate. I had one boys group, and one girls group. I am going to tie this in with what we learned in our Life Science Unit at the beginning of our school year. It will be an extension activity to what weve learned about plants and how dependent all living things are to plants. I think this is a great project that my students can work on independently with little guidance. I think this project will be a great way to review life science concepts and give an opportunity for an engaging extension activity. 1st I will discuss the project with the group and go over steps of the activity that were downloaded from the site. 2nd I will give them the observation sheet and make sure they understand everything they need to do, and go over any vocabulary that they do not understand. 3rd Then I will have them go out and find a tree that they would like to choose for the project. Once they find the tree, gather, and record their data they will be given either a video camera, or a photo camera. 4th Students will then record, or take pictures, and put a presentation together that will be submitted to the Trees of the World website. 5th Then I will have them write a paragraph on their experience.

This is the observation form that students had to fill out. Each student had to fill out their own. Students went out into the field with a clipboard, pencil, observation form, and a tape measure.

Student Reactions:
Students really enjoyed the project. It was something different for them and they really enjoyed the collaboration part of it along with the freedom they had to go out on their own. They also enjoyed researching, and creating their PowerPoints for the project. The girls group enjoyed creating a video and posting it on the website I created for the project. Also, my entire class enjoyed viewing the projects from our website. This project went great with what the students had learned during their life science unit. It was a great extension activity for my higherlevel students.

My target date for implementing this GLP is possibly mid-February. I ended up starting and finishing the project the first week of March.

My plan is to use the English Learner group I work with 4 days a week during our 4th Grade ELD block. I will use the 3 students from my class to actually participate. I am going to tie this in with our ELD block where we work on language development. In addition to vocabulary development, one thing that has been my focus for this particular group is oral language skills and public speaking skills. I think this project would fit in perfect with what the students are working on, and it will be an engaging way for them to do so. 1st I will discuss the project with the group and brainstorm what they would be interested in sharing with the world. 2nd I will give them an assignment sheet with guidelines and restrictions on what they can and cant share, and how long their presentation should be. 3rd They will prepare their presentation and practice it. 4th We will either video record, or take digital pictures of the presentation. 5th They will write a paragraph to support their presentation.

Everything went as planned with the project except that I couldnt use my ELD students that I originally wanted to use. The reason for this was because we stopped our ELD rotations for that month because we started intervention groups instead. It was a bit disappointing because I think that this would have been a perfect project for the students that I originally planned on using this for. Either way, it still worked out fine because I went through the same process as planned, but I got to choose volunteers from my class that havent had an opportunity to participate in many projects this year. The students went through all the originally planned steps and created a little video segment. I ended up piecing their segments together and made one video to submit for the project.

The Show n Tell Website

It was a very simple project and I think overall that the students enjoyed sharing their items. There really wasnt much that went into it other than them planning what they wanted to share and then filming their show and tell. Next time, if I do this again, I will try and spend a little more time on it. It was very difficult to implement it with everything that was going on at that time of the year.
